THE DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE closed the day down 355.45 points, or 4.1 percent, at 8,308.05. It was the Dow’s lowest close since Aug. 6.
The Nasdaq composite index finished Tuesday down 51.01 points, or 3.9 percent, at 1,263.84, recording its biggest one-day drop in percentage terms since July 25.
Other market indices closed Tuesday with sharp losses, including the broad Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, which fell 38.05 points, or 4.2 percent, to 878.02.
Bonds rallied as stocks slid and the U.S. dollar was weaker. Trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange was light and markets in Europe and Asia slumped.
