A letter to Dalit

Dear Dalit,

First of all thank you for atleast letting me know that you are contemplating legal action against eCharchan Rahul. I sincerely apreciate you telling me as I run the eCharcha.Com site.


Well, what I feel like saying is this - Do you think that a remark made by someone on some website will really defame or reduce the stature and the work done by your ideal and hero Dr. Ambedkar?

Do you think making a big issue and involving eCharcha.Com will serve any purpose towards spreading the message of Dr. Ambedkar?

Do you think you have brought people more closer to Dr. Ambedkar's cause or have distanced peple from it?

Do you think suing Rahul will change his mind? He may face legal actions but will that imbibe a new respect and honour for Dr. Ambedkar?

Just think or a moment - Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeeda attacked USA to further the cause of Islam. Islam here means the Islam as interpreted by these extremists. Do you think this made the common man respect Islam more or did he start fearing that Islam was a terrorist religion?

Do you think the world is more at peace with Islam by these terrorist acts?

Do you not think that your actions and intentions of suing someone because he or she does not respect or rather abhors your hero are going to cause more heartburn and hatred for your hero?

Dont you think this is like stirring a hornet's nest?

I agree that one should have heroes and ideals in life. I too love Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Infact, since you are into caste system issues, I come from his clan of brave Marathas. But when someone calls Shivaji any names or tries to defame his name, I dont threaten with a lawsuit. I try to reply to the person and explain my views and clear any misconceptions. Yes sometimes this is done in a strong language but doing anything beyond that will only embitter and distance the person from my ideals and heros.

Think about it. You worship Dr. ambedkar - good.. really you have some mission and ideal in life. Many dont know what they are doing in life. Many dont have direction. I am glad that you have it.

But also think now, about the after-effects of this issue, with a cool that your actions and petty squabbles have caused or will cause.

I am not cornering you nor patronising you. But really if you respect Dr. Ambedkar so much then I think you need to be more cool headed in the way you spread his message.

Every good cause has had its critics, but perseverance of the messenger in spreading the goodness of the cause has always won over petty squabbles and hot headed shouting.

Well, I have reservations against Dr. Ambedkar. I dont agree to all his policies. This is my opinion. I hope you do understand that there cannot be a discussion if neither party agrees to the fact that there will always be some disagreement.

i have been indisposed for the past few days and seem to have missed all the action. but as a preliminary thought i will say that as a matter of law you cannot defame the dead. it seems that the law feels that a man's reputation dies with him.

also, with religions, unless there is a specific law which states that religious libel is actionable, it is not possible to sue for things said against your religion.

chill out guys, in the interests of free speech and peace at this festive time of the year- if nothing else.

Can I for example sue somebody because that person said something against Nathuram Godse?
