Trip to Greenland

This summer, I went on a trip to Greenland for 8 days / 7 nights. I was on the Arctic Circle Trail for 5 nights and 2 nights in a small town called Kangerlussuaq (Kanger for short).

Kanger is a small town with a population of 550 located in the southwestern part of Greenland. It's main and only economy is the airport. It is the country's airport hub. Outside the airport, there is one supermarket, a couple of tour companies and souvenier shops. There are 3 to 5 restaurants; one of which is a Thai place (he also makes some indian curries).

The Arctic Circle trail is a 105 mile trail from Kanger to another small town called Sisimiut (population 2000). The trail is a wild and desolate tundra. There are no towns or provisions. The trail is marked by stone-built cairns and there are huts / shelters scattered every 12 to 15 miles. The landscape is nothing more than rolling, rocky hills, boulders, bogs and giant lakes. There's no ice during the summer. The track itself is a narrow, meandering path filled with bogs and rocks. It's easy to get lost, but the cairns help you get back on track.

We didn't do the entire trail, but a large section of it and looped back to the starting point. We trekked for around 80 miles over 5 days. We had to carry all our provisions. Our backpack was around 40 lbs. Everyday, we walked for about 15 - 20 miles. One day, we found a broken canoe. We used duck tape and a rock to fix it and used it to canoe across a 20-mile long lake. It was a fun experience until we hit a storm. The water was choppy and was filling our canoe. Luckily, we paddled our way to the destination in time. My feet were frozen from the icy waters.

Here was our itinerary:
Day 1: 20 miles from Kanger to Kattifik Hut. Rather easy trail and it was a nice, sunny day.
Day 2: Trekked another 18 to 20 miles from Kattiffik to Canoe center. It was a good day, but very very long.
Day 3: Trekked 2 to 5 miles from Canoe center to Kayak frame (end of a lake called Amitsorsuaq). Then canoed around 20 miles for 6 hours to get back to Kattiffik hut
Day 4: Kattifik hut to another shelter called Hundeso hut. It rained the entire day. The trail was mushy. My feet were soaked. It was brutal. But we had to walk, so we walked .. and walked .. and walked. We reached the Hundeso hut late in the evening and were exhausted. But our exhaustion changed to shudders when we saw the hut. It was a creepy shelter. It was an abandoned hunter's den. It had a butcher station and storage station outside. There were a lot of old hunting equipment. There was only one book in there - 'Cats Revenge: 101 uses for Dead People.' It was a perfect site for a horror movie. We spent the night there.
Day 5: Walk from Hundeso to Kanger. This was another 15 miles in scattered storms. We cheated and hitchhiked for the last 6 miles. We rode on the back of a truck. It was a relief. My knees and ankles were sore as hell!

We reached Kanger late in the evening. We had a refreshing bottle of Coke, some thai food and went to a hostel.

... to continue..

Re: Trip to Greenland

Upon return to Kanger, we went to a local thai restaurant for dinner. We started a conversation with two ladies dining beside us. Turns out, one of them was a glaciologist (Professor from university of Michigan). The other was her mom, a photographer. They had extensive knowledge of Greenland. They offered us to ride to the Ice Sheet with them. We accepted.

They took us to exclusive sites within the Arctic Ice Sheet. We hiked on the ice sheet for a couple of hours. We walked to several different glaciers. We saw glaciers calving and causing a loud sound, almost like a gun shot. We saw reindeers, musk ox, polar rabbits and caribou.

I collected several rocks with garnetts studded in them. The rocks were unique and colorful. She described each rock and I took notes.

We treated them to dinner at a local high-end restaurant. I had musk-ox carpaccio. It is basically raw meat, sliced and dabbed with oil and herbs. I had whale carpaccio and whale skins. Whale skin is like rubber. I tasted reindeer steak, which was very gamey. My main course was halibut, which was delish.

They have a unique drink called Greenlandic Coffee. It's basically Kalua Rum, something else, coffee and Grand Marnier.

Overall, it was an epic adventure.

No strip clubs. Girls were not worth meeting. Several lady trekkers, but you wouldn't wanna mess with them.

Thai is comfort food.
