UP Stir: Rahul Gandhi Meets Greater Noida Farmers

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today interacted with villagers of Bhatta Parsaul here which witnessed violent clashes between the police and farmers over the issue of land acquisition.

Catching the administration off guard, Gandhi reached the village at 6 am and visited the houses of villagers.

He is interacting with the locals to understand their problems.

After four persons, including two policemen, were killed in Saturday's clashes between police and farmers in Greater Noida, the place has turned into a political battleground for parties which have flayed the Uttar Pradesh government's land acquisition policy.

The Amethi MP had last year visited Tappal Village in Aligarh district where the farmers had launched a protest demanding higher compensation for the land acquired by the Mayawati government for the Yamuna expressway project.

Farmers in Greater Noida and adjoining areas are demanding more compensation from the Mayawati government for their land.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had yesterday assured a delegation of Rashtriya Lok Dal leaders in Delhi that the Government will move the crucial bill to amend the Land Acquisition Act in the coming session of Parliament.

Condemning police action on farmers in Gautam Buddha Nagar, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi had yesterday demanded that a new law for rehabilitation of people displaced by land acquisition should be framed.

"Taking farmers' land at a cheaper rates and permitting industrialists to misuse it is wrong," Joshi had said.

In the wake of the ongoing agitation over land acquisition, farmers held a panchayat under the leadership of Jitender Nagar in Mahrauli village of Ghaziabad district yesterday and refused to part with their land.

The farmers went on a door-to-door campaign to mobilise support and asked villagers to press the government to give them back their acquired land.

Greater Noida: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police late Wednesday night while he was on a sit-in at Bhatta Parsaul village in support of agitating farmers demanding higher compensation for their land that is being acquired for a highway project.

State Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and party MP Raj Babbar were also arrested with Gandhi, Gautam Budh Nagar acting district magistrate Sheetal Verma said.
"Rahul Gandhi has been arrested for violating the prohibitory orders enforced under section 144 of Cr.P.C ((Criminal Procedure Code). State president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Digvijay Singh and Raj Babbar were also arrested along with Rahul Gandhi," she said.
The district administration, prior to the arrests, imposed section 144 of the Cr.P.C.
According to the rules, Gandhi would be produced before a court Thursday and till then, he would be lodged at the appropriate place in consultation with Special Protection Group personnel, the official said.
Police and agitating farmers fought a pitched battle Saturday in Bhatta Parsaul that killed four people, including two policemen.
Gandhi was in the village supporting farmers who are agitating for higher compensation for land acquired for the 156-km Yamuna Expressway, linking New Delhi with Agra.
The Congress scion sneaked into the village, which was barred to politicians and outsiders, early Wednesday on a motor-bike despite heavy police presence. He spent nearly 18 hours with the villagers before his arrest.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee has condemned the arrest of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh today saying the Mayawati government had done an "unpardonable" deed.

"Maharashtra Congress unit strongly condemns Rahulji's arrest. Mayawati government has done something which is unpardonable and deserves condemnation," MPCC president Manikrao Thakre told PTI here tonight.

Rahul had gone to Uttar Pradesh to support the cause of farmers and the Mayawati government arrested him, Thakre said.

"We have convened a meeting of MPCC functionaries tomorrow to discuss the issue, after which further course of action would be announced," he said.

Rahul Gandhi released on bail in UP; reaches Delhi

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was arrested late on Wednesday night by the Uttar Pradesh police capping a day of high drama after he slipped in unnoticed in pre-dawn hours to support the farmers agitating against the state government's land acquisition process for an expressway project.

After a three-hour midnight drama of arrest and release, Rahul Gandhi was finally escorted back to Delhi by the UP police through the DND expressway and left at the inter-state bus terminus at Sarai Kale Khan, bringing an end to a nearly 24-hour sequence of events.

Gandhi, who spent almost 19 hours at Bhatta Parsaul, the epicentre of the farmers' agitation, was arrested under Sec 151 of CrPC at around 11:00 p.m. and was taken to the Kasna police station in Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

He was released on bail by the Uttar Pradesh police and brought to Delhi at 2:15 a.m.

He was arrested along with AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress MPs Raj Babbar and Parvez Hashmi, and other Congress leaders.

At the Kasna police station in Greater Noida, a Delhi suburb, Gandhi questioned the grounds on which he was arrested.

"They are not showing us the documentation," he said. "Our fight against the Mayawati government will continue. We will be happy to go to jail on farmers' issues," Digvijay Singh told reporters soon after their release.

He wanted the National Human Rights Commission to look into the matter. Digvijay Singh said the Congress would stage a strong protest against Gandhi's arrest on Thursday.

no it was damn hot, I studied in class six and seven there, saw jackie shroff there when they came for shooting of film border, and sushmita sen too, after she became miss universe and took her autograph too, but i dont have that autograph now.

Sonia mata wanted the petrol price hike last evening and for that she teamed up with Mayavati aunty to get Rahul arrested but the media did not follow up on Rahul's arrest as no one was interested so the petrol price hike has been deferred for this weekend meanwhile they are in search for some bold headline which the media would play to divert the minds like they did last time with onions.
