The CM even promised to instal new statues.HYDERABAD: Angry pro-Telangana mobs uprooted 11 statues of Andhra icons, including that of Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadeva Raya, and flung them into the Hussain Sagar lake on Thursday, as a potential precursor to a fresh spiral of violence. The protests seemed designed to deepen linguistic and political faultlines between pro- and anti-Telangana sections over an Andhra identity.

Apart from hurling Krishnadeva Raya's statue — his 16th century reign represents the high noon of Telugu culture — the Telangana activists also smashed the statue of Sir Arthur Cotton, the British engineer who brought irrigation and prosperity to the state.

Statues of Annamacharya, famous for his hymns in honour of Lord Balaji of Tirumala, were also vandalized among eight others, which included eminent Telugu statesmen and literary figures.

The statues of 33 iconic personalities of Andhra Pradesh were installed more than 25 years ago by then chief minister N T Rama Rao. "This action represents the assertion of the people of Telangana that their culture is not the same as that of Andhra and that they don't care for Andhra," said an analyst.

In the five-hour violence between 1.30pm and 5.30 pm, Telangana activists also set on fire the Dwacra building on Lower Tank Bund road, a police vehicle, the OB van of a television channel, looted an ATM and damaged another police vehicle and cameras belonging to TV channels.

The marauding mob also manhandled Congress MPs K Keshava Rao and Madhu Yashki and forced them to flee. DGP K Aravinda Rao said cases were being registered for the violence unleashed by the protesters, including the desecration of statues, and promised to bring offenders to book.

Furious activists attacked Rakshak, a police van, and as soon as the cops inside fled, set it on fire. Even as the security personnel began advancing towards them, the crowd starting throwing stones. Faced with relentless stone-pelting, the Rapid Action Force too retreated hastily.

After that, the protesters had a free run as all security personnel had withdrawn from either end of the Tank Bund road. The violence that ensued ended only after police reinforcements arrived with tear gas shells to clear the area of protesters around 6pm, after which the Tank Bund road was sealed.

Peace Bhau, it is polarized between two camps. Public opinion is also polarized -- those in Telangana at this time want a separate state, those in Andhra want a unified state. And everybody covets Hyderabad.

Strange thing is TRS party won only a dozen or so MLAs (out of 295) in last elections. They never got that much support from public in Telangana then. But at that time, Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was CM, and he was very powerful in Congress. He wielded the kind of clout over the Andhra Pradesh Congress organization that Narendra Modi wields over the Gujarat BJP organization.

When YSR was alive, nobody dared to question him, including the leader of the Telangana agitation, KCR. When YSR was alive, KCR lay low.

Normally, in Congress, we don't see strong leaders like YSR, because show is run usually from the high command in Delhi.

The violence during the Million March protest in Hyderabad on Thursday seems to have caused considerable confusion in the ranks of the Telangana [ Images ] movement leaders.
While some of them have condemned the incidents like the destruction of the 17 statues of coastal Andhra leaders on Tank Bund and attacks on the mediapersons and some elected representatives, others refused to be apologetic.


Telangana Joint Action Committee convenor Prof Kodanda Ram has alleged that the destruction of the statues was handiwork of policemen in plainclothes to discredit the Telangana movement.


He said if the leader of the movement were not arrested and they were present on the Tank Bund at the time of the incidents, such incidents could have been averted.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrasekhar Rao, who also faced the wrath of the people of Tank Bund, condemned the violence. But his son and TRS legislator Taraka Rama Rao said that destruction of the statues was a minor incident compared to the suicide by 600 youth and students of Telangana for separate state.

On the incident of attack on the media representatives and destruction of cameras, he said that a section of the media had provoked the people of Telangana by biased reporting and by distorting the facts.

Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee has demanded that in place of the demolished statues of Andhra leaders, statues of the Telangana students, who committed suicide should be installed.


It also demanded that the statues of Telangana historical figures like Kumram Bheem should also be installed there.

It bitterly criticised Telugu Desam Party President N Chandrababu Naidu [ Images ] and Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi [ Images ] saying they were now mourning the demolition of the statues but remained silent when 600 Telangana youth ended their lives demanding Telangana state.

Chalasani Prasad of Revolutionary Writers' Association demanded the government should immediately initiate the action for the formation of Telangana state.

On the issue of the attack on media, which has left the fourth state angry, an important leader of Telangana movement, balladeer Ghaddar has tendered an unconditional apology and said that every body should work together to realise the dream of Telangana state.

destruction of these statues are bigger conspiracy to make the divide permanent and deep. Those statues are cultural and historical legacy of telugu people....unified telugu people without any boundaries.

The state must be divided without any delay ...before the vested interests and greedy politicians turn this to permanent rivalry between people of these two regions.

That is some bull crap of a congressi who is a chamcha of jagan. How can they say telangana is a non issue ..when the whole state is NOT FUNCTIONING since a year...last couple of months being worse. ?

some politicians are thinking that they can kill this agitation ..putting it in ignore mode...but it has crossed that stage. There are open debates and ugly arguments among common people of andhra pradesh over the distinctness if these two regions.

The destruction of statues is a red signal for politicos, it is going to be more ugly as we move on without addressing this issue.

if all this is true, rather than 500 people sacrificing their lives for a seperate telangana, should this union minister not get a nice beating from the telangana leaders/population on first available opportunity? no leader will speak like this against popular sentiment..

Would you apply this logic to J & K also. Agreed here it is just splitting the state and not challenging the sovereignity, but the idea is do you agree to something just to prevent things getting uglier.

The T issue is there for a long time but the mobs only started after the current and the last CMs are not competent enough to put it in control.
Also the support for separation in Telangana reduced with TRS dropping from 26 to 10 seats between 2004 and 2009. It has surged now, it may drop later on.

Conspiracy by whom? What exactly are you insinuating? Ofcourse, people like viking will laugh at us. Why shouldn't they? After all, we have managed to bring down a state that was on path to competing with top states like Gujarat, Karnataka, TN etc economically. Now, we can comfortably compete with UP and Orissa to the bottom.

What Telugu Pride. Was there a Statue of PVN on TankBund.

He was the modern Day Chanakya and Revived India and the first realtime Hindu Leader post Ashoka.

His Statue should have been the biggest.Any state all Airports are named after Local Hero. Biju Patnaik has Airport named after him .

Modi got Jaswant Singh out of BJP for talking against Saradar Patel, but look how PVN was humiliated.

PVN was the most unfortunate who was from Telangana and couldn't have even Hyderabad Airport named after him .

YSR humiliated him by just making an expressway after him. YSR converted the one IT Hub into a Real Estate Hub and people relected him back. Forget about Villagers, City people relected YSR and Congress.

A Community which can't respect its heroes will see this day.

Why is everyone after me? Did I post something untrue? This is reality and these people are not instigated by me for heavens sakes. It was halarious that these people could demolish a statue of Sri. Krishnadevaraya a Hindu icon. Of course these Telgus do not have anything to do with Hindutva is another thing.

People who leapfrog at the opportunity to degrade Balasaheb and Shiv Sena should first see whats being flushed out in their own backyard
