Sad news thread..

Quote:
At weapon demo, cop accidentally shoots 2 kids
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times

Hyderabad, October 20, 2010
First Published: 16:36 IST(20/10/2010)
Last Updated: 00:57 IST(21/10/2010)

Two high school students were killed and three injured when a policeman fired a rifle thinking it was not loaded during a police weapon demonstration in Andhra Pradesh's coastal Khammam district on Wednesday. The police were giving a demonstration of weapons and communication devices used by them to combat Maoists in the northeastern coastal district, which borders Maoist-affected Malkangiri district of neighbouring Orissa.

The light automatic rifle went off when a police constable picked it up to demonstrate how it works to students of the Zilla Parishad High School who had gathered there.

The constable was not aware that the carbine was fully loaded, the police said.

Two students — Medepalli Venkatkrishna (16) and Pasumarthy Satya Sai Babu (13) — died on the spot. They were in front of the constable and were received bullets in the stomach, the police said. The other three students who were injured were rushed to the district government hospital and are reported to be out of danger.

The district administration has ordered a probe.

DGP Aravinda Rao said the constable was supposed to be carrying a loaded weapon but he was not meant to be in the area where the students were being given a demonstration.

He said this appeared to have happened because of the overenthusiasm of the constable.

"It was unfortunate and stupid on his part," he said, adding disciplinary action would be taken against him.

The event at Velerupadu village, 370 km north of Hyderabad, was part of the police commemoration week.

No Premi.. I didn't mean a video about the shooting, but the video news of the incident. The details are still sketchy on internet.

The constable was not aware that the carbine was fully loaded, the police said.

So casual explanation !!

"It was unfortunate and stupid on his part," he said, adding disciplinary action would be taken against him.

Sabarimala stampede: 100 devotees feared killed, 90 injured

NDTV Correspondent, Updated: January 15, 2011 01:00 IST

Idukki, Kerala: 100 people are feared killed and more than 90 people have been injured in a stampede at the Sabarimala shrine in Kerala's Idukki district. The incident took place seven kilometres away from the shrine. 55 bodies have been recovered so far. (First pictures)

Sabarimala's Special Commissioner, Rajendra Nayar told NDTV that 100 people are feared killed. He that the stampede occurred after a bus accident which cause panic among the devotees.

Reports suggest that the accident and the consequent stampede occurred in a hilly area, beyond the Sabarimala police protection area. The terrain has made rescue and relief operations difficult.

The Director General of the Kerala Police, and other top officials have rushed to the area.

The devotees were returning after Makaravilakku ritual in Sabarimala.

Thousands of devotees had turned up for worship at the hill shrine during the 'makara samkrama pooja' on Friday evening, marking the finale of two-month pilgrimage to the famous Lord Ayyappa temple.

They were returning after 'makara jyoti', held as a divine light by the devotees, which flickered across the eastern horizon above the Ponnambalamedu after the pooja.

The pooja was conducted with the idol of the deity adorned with the holy jewels "Thiruvabharanam", brought to the sanctum sanctorum in a ceremonial procession moments before the 'aarti'.

Re: Sad news thread..

Sad news indeed. I have never understood the reason that people will rush like crazy into a temple only to get a glimpse of the God and then be pushed out within seconds by the ushers or the oncoming crowd.

Whenever I visit Mumbai, I always visit the Siddhivinayak Temple, but never on Tuesdays because there is a mad rush and the longest lines you can imagine. Even on other days, there is a rush. They push and jostle and you can hardly spend a few minutes in the innermost sanctum of the temple. So I just follow and dont resist while the crowd and the temple ushers are busy pushing their way to get a better darshan and then get out of the sanctum. However, I will then go to the side, from where you get a side glimpse and so there is no rush. I will sit down there, close my eyes and say my prayers or whatever it is I am saying to Ganpati bappa. Sometimes I never get to even bow down my head inside the sanctum, but I know that by visiting the temple, I have had my darshan and I am happy with whatever I can get.

On a slightly unrelated note - Remember that asshole M F Hussain. He was crazy after Madhuri Dixit. Then recently he had changed his 'inspiration' and Maywati was his favorite. I think he has once more changed to someone else now.
