Police cancel Vengaboys' Hyderabad tour !

The Rangareddy district police on Monday revoked permission for staging of a live concert by the Vengaboys on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday evening.

The last-minute cancellation of the show -- the last by the music group during their current Indian tour -- was communicated to the organisers by Rangareddy District Superintendent of Police M V Ramachandra Raju late on Monday night.

The decision followed protests by the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Students Islamic Organisation.

The BJP and SIO contended that the show should not be staged since vulgarity and obscenity were against the Indian culture. They approached state Home Minister T Devender Goud and pleaded with him not to allow the show to take place.

To avert any trouble, the home minister instructed the director general of police to initiate measures to stop the show.

The Vengaboys have already performed at Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Calcutta and Cochin so far. The four-member group was already in the city, hoping to stage the concert for an estimated 10,000 music freaks.

Incidentally, the Vengaboys was the third international band to come to the city after Diana King and Boney M.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday struck down the Rangareddy district police order revoking the permission granted earlier for Vengaboys to stage their concert in Hyderabad.

Pronouncing the orders on a petition filed by the event managers -- DNA Networks -- Justice G Raghuram said the organisers could go ahead with the show, but laid down certain conditions to prevent any nudity or obscenity during the show.
