Khaattaa Meethaa

I am waiting eagerly to watch this one. Looks like Priyadarshan has spun his magic once more with Akshay Kumar.

Re: Khaattaa Meethaa

Sour N stale

Khatta Meetha

Director: Priyadarshan
Actors: Akshay Kumar, Trisha, Rajpal Yadav, Asrani, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Aruna Irani, Milind Gunaji, Makarand Deshpande, Tinu Anand
Run time: 155 mins
Certification: U
Rating: * 1 /2

Sigh. After a delightful last week, here we go again. The opening credits of Khatta Meetha reveal that this film is a “project designed by Twinkle Khanna”, who is an interior designer besides being Akshay Kumar’s wife, and “filmed by Priyadarshan”, who once made Viraasat and Hera Pheri, which now seems a long time ago.

After sitting through the long and laborious Khatta Meetha, you realize that designed and filmed are indeed both the right words, since there is little direction or inspiration in this stale venture.

It is stuffed with gags, set-ups and stock characters, in a silly, stunted, scattered script which is stitched up rather poorly. The film desperately tries to be funny but just ends up being very tedious.

Akshay Kumar plays yet another common man. This time it’s Sachin Tichkule, a sandal wearing, umbrella carrying, simpleton who happens to be modeled on the cartoon character created by R K Laxman. Really, what was the need? Mr Tichkule stays with his mummy-papa (Irani-Kharbanda), elder brother (Milind Junaji) and a couple of brothers-in-law, in a large south Indian style palatial house, good for filming movies in.

It’s a fully filmy family, so poor mother has a pained, tired look, the father is stern though wise, the sole sister is sweet and syrupy, the brothers are fat and mean, the sisters-in-law fatter and meaner, while poor Akshay is the black sheep of the family, simple and god fearing.

While the vile brothers are totally crooked and thus successful people, Akshay is a poor contractor, with Rajpal Yadav as his sidekick.

The story remained unclear to me but various incidents occur. A bridge built by the corrupt brothers collapses, and many people, including Makarand Deshpande’s family die. So, the brothers get faithful driver (Tinnu Anand) to confess to placing a bomb, before smoothly killing him to cover their tracks. A slimy politician, who will later marry and ill treat their sister, helps them in this.

While Akshay and his crew of labourers fix a road, using minimal concrete, they mistakenly pick a fight with the new municipal commissioner (Trisha). Ooops. Akshay and Trisha happen to have a really stretched college connection in the past, shown in flashback, and they don’t like each other now.

Asrani appears in a side plot which has nothing to do with the film, but is quite funny, specially the phone sequence.

Finally in a case he had filed, Akshay gets awarded a bull-dozer by the municipality. Now they need a driver, and so appears Johnny Lever. The bull dozer doesn’t move, so Lever opens up the engine, scattering the large number of parts. Finally, they get an elephant to tow the bull dozer, except en route the rope breaks and the dozer crashes into Trisha’s house.

Then Akshay tries to traps Trisha in a blackmail case, while Makarand discovers the dark deeds of the politician, leading to him being chopped with cutters in a bus. The film ends with the vile brothers arrested, and Akshay and Trisha all lovey-dovey. Khatta Meetha is poorly shot, badly directed and is not funny.

Akshay Kumar does a familiar act; Trisha looks much younger than him, while the rest of the cast complements the average film.

Khatta Meetha is stuffed with gags, set-ups and stock characters, in a silly, stunted, scattered script which is stitched up rather poorly

Re: Khaattaa Meethaa

Saw this one last night.

Well, the movie is no Hera Pheri or even De Dana Dan, both of which were really good comedy entertainers.

Yet, I dont agree with critics and their reviews.

Its a real topic being handled by adding comedy so as to get audiences into cinemas and think about it.

Its about how corruption goes on in 'development work' like constructing infrastructure - roads, canals, drainage, etc. in rural India. How the local governments and the contractors work hand in hand to gobble up the funds allocated for such work by the state, central governments and even world bodies like World Bank, etc.

So to keep a serious topic interesting and make a financially feasible film, Priyadarshan has used his usual formula and its not bad. The same type of issue was handled in a recent film called Welcome Abba starring Boman Irani where he constructs a well with a government loan but all on paper and then complains that his well has been stolen.

People wont go to watch a documentary, so film makers have to add some star power and comedy and usual masala.

Watch this at home if you have to but its not a bad film.

Re: Khaattaa Meethaa

Ah...just came back after viewing this movie at theatre with my family. The film is good and total TIME PASS type of a movie. Both Akshay Kumar and Rajpal Yadav are at the best for their comedy. The actress is not that cool at all. Bus bhai log yu samajh lo ke Akshay aur Rajpal ne baandh ke rakha hai movie. Thats it.

I will give 3.5 stars out of 5 to this movie.

Re: Khaattaa Meethaa

Just finished watching the movie. Not all out and out comedy.
Movie has a good message to it, and few moments are really funny.
AK has done his usual Priyadarshani role and has done a good job.
Movie's base story is same as Chal chala chal with corruption story into it.
Watch it at home.

Re: Khaattaa Meethaa

Saw this yesterday!

2.5/5 stars.

Not a complete comedy. Does have good expose on corruption in local governments. Dont understand why Trisha was chosen as the heroine. Had a few good comedy elements.

Tichkule rocks!

this fkkin movie gave me a headache - what with all the hyderabadi hindi and bawdi talk...might have worked in the theatre, but at home it was just sheer torture..

They showed why they break up. It was over some college student's protest and the heroine does not agree with it and the hero feels insulted by it.
