dowry is outdated I think( might be wrong ) but latest in trends is something else and question could be more versatile for the people who reject/wont consider less/non-earning well educated would be spouse for a less mannered, high earning person.

Ideas change... sometimes naturally... other times forcefully. So, though you may think dowry-taking is bad... you will still take it, sometimes because parents may force it... other times because in-laws may force it. Ab ghar aaye dhan ko kya tum tukraoge

My husband/in-laws didn't ask. If they had, I wouldn't have married him.

But I agree with Sane though. Sometimes, in few situations you just cant avoid it. When my cousin was getting married, her parents have given dowry. They say its their status symbol, though I never agree that status comes in setting a price tag.

I did not took dowry instead i gave Maher(some form of dowry) which is must when getting married

why pay cash/gold/car, status can be shown by doing a ceremony in GRAND way. no....

people should remember the occasion through their lives as an outstanding and perfectly planned not as it was okay, food was so so but they give 1 crore in cash.

Same thing... you just gave dowry, that's all. In other words, you bought your wife... life from a shop.

The disgusting dowry system is still prevalent in India. Extorting dowry from the bride’s family is downright cheap. And extorting dowry in the name of shagun is even more disgusting.

The proverbial institution of marriage is turning out to be a modified form of extortion.

Why do Indian families expect dowry… What kind of a man is he who asks for dowry…

Isn’t it enough that the girl is leaving behind her entire family to tread into a relatively unknown territory?

India is obsessed with ‘dowry’ as it is with ‘marriage’. Budgeting for wedding is one of the hardest things to do. A father feels obligated to spend lakhs of money while the girl is made to feel like a liability.

Dowry equals bride-price. It is no less than the barter system. If taking dowry is a crime, so is giving. The giver and the taker, both are party to the crime.

Let us say that there are only 2 bachelors left in the entire world, one a rich well-to-do guy with all the social vices that can be found (in a society). And the other one is a very poor guy but what society calls a 'khara sona'... a real honest, principled guy... but so poor that he lives in a hut with no amenities of the modern world, walks to work and hardly has any clothes.

So, we have this well-to-do family who wants to marry their daughter away. Who should they give their daughter to? The rich boy's family, where she will live like a queen... or the poor boy's family, where she will have to make ends meet? And should they give dowry?

the poor guy cos being man with principals he wont take money from in-laws even if it is offered and your well to do, well educated girl will settle the things in her own way and she can get herself a job and work to make living better. and given a bit time you ll have a happy couple.

rich guy ...ummm... ll kill somebody on the road someday after getting drunk and what not
