Exclamation Love, Betrayal, Sex, Murder & Gore

This chilling incident that dominated my city headlines for a week has it all.

A fledgling actress (A proven slut now) trying to make it big on the small screen comes to Bombay, befriends the creative head of a reputed TV production house & the two develop an intimate relationship. Her possessive boyfriend & would be Fiancé in Cochin working with the Indian Navy suspects her of two timing him. To unravel the truth, he takes the first early morning flight from Cochin, arrives in Bombay & knocks on her door in the wee hours on 7 May 2008. Furious at finding a man in her bedroom with no clothes on, heated words get exchanged & a scuffle ensues that results in a gruesome murder. Read below about the cover up & how the cops cracked the case & unveiled one of the most horrendous murders in the city’s history.

Missing man found cut into 300 pieces

Neeraj Grover’s friend Maria, whose house he visited last, confesses to killing him along with her jealous Navy man boyfriend, cutting his body into pieces and burning it at Manor in rural Thane

The search for Neeraj Grover, the creative head of Adlabs Synergy, who was missing since May 6, took a spine-chilling turn, with the police arresting Neeraj’s close friend and actor Maria for murdering Neeraj.

Maria and her boyfriend had apparently killed Neeraj, chopped up his body into 300 pieces before burning it at Manor in Thane rural.

While Maria was arrested on Tuesday night, her boyfriend, M L Mathew, a Navy man, has been detained by the Naval police in Kochi, where he is posted at present. A Mumbai crime branch team has already left to take custody of him.

Meanwhile, the police are trying to collect the Neeraj’s remains from the spot where it was set on fire. But only a handful of bones and a piece of skull remain.

“The body was chopped to small pieces and some pieces are burnt while some eaten by wild animals.

“We are collecting other remains and will do DNA fingerprinting to establish that they belong to Neeraj Grover,” DCP Deven Bharti of Mumbai Crime Branch told Mumbai Mirror.

While the Mumbai Police came across this shocking murder plot on Tuesday night ending uncertainty over Neeraj’s disappearance, his parents who have been in Mumbai for the past two weeks were intentionally not informed about it till late Wednesday evening.

“We wanted to be doubly sure about murder story first. But now we have informed his parents and briefed them about whatever transpired,” Bharti added.

How the story unravelled

Neeraj goes missing

Neeraj Grover, a native of Kanpur, UP, used to stay at Seven Bungalows in a rented apartment along with his two friends and a cousin. On May 6, he was having dinner at his house when he received a call from Maria, an actor from Bangalore who was looking for a break in Bollywood. Maria had recently shifted to Dhiraj Solitaire Building at Chincholi Bunder, Malad, and had called Neeraj to help her set up the house.

Neeraj, also associated with Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain? had met Maria a few weeks ago. Maria had come for an audition and they hit it off. Maria had also stayed in Neeraj’s flat as she could not arrange for a place before she moved into her Malad flat.

When he went missing, Maria lodged a complaint at Malad police station. She said he had got repeated calls from a friend called Nisha and had left her house late on the night of May 6. Maria told the police she did not know what happened thereafter.

Police began probe

“Maria had lodged a missing complaint regarding Neeraj. We recorded her statement but did not come across anything concrete. There were only two possibilities. Either Neeraj was kidnapped or something had happened to him that Maria was aware of,” DCP Bharti said.

As ingredients seen in a kidnapping case were missing, Bharti asked a team, led by Inspector Ashok Borkar, Sagar Shivalkar and Sanjeev Gawade, to focus on Maria. The team interrogated the watchman of Dhiraj Solitaire who said he saw Maria and a man drive away in a Santro on May 8 with some bags. “This vital information was missing from Maria’s statement,” Bharti said, adding that Maria finally broke down on Tuesday night.

What actually happened

While Neeraj was at Maria’s house on May 6, she received a call from her boyfriend Matthew. “Matthew heard Neeraj’s voice in the background and asked Maria about it. Maria told him that Neeraj was there to help her and would leave soon.” DCP Bharti said. However, Mathew caught a midnight flight for Mumbai and reached Maria’s flat at around 7 am,” Bharti said. Seeing Neeraj still at the flat Matthew completely lost it.

An argument ensued in which Matthew attacked Neeraj and killed him with a kitchen knife. He and Maria then cut up Neeraj’s body into 300 pieces, put it in the bag and took it to Manor in Thane, where it was set on fire. The also wiped the flat clean. Maria told police that Matthew left for Kochi on the night of May 9, while she later lodged a complaint of Neeraj going missing.

According to police, Maria and Matthew are from Mysore and had studied in the same school. They were going steady for long and were to get engaged. But Maria decided to postpone the engagement and moved to Mumbai for a break in Bollywood. “Matthew suspected something was fishy about Maria’s decision to postpone the engagement and kept a constant watch on her,” DCP Bharti said.

He used to call us without fail every single day

Neeraj’s father Amarnath on his son

On Wednesday morning, a few hours before learning of his sons terrible death, Mirror spoke to Neeraj Grover’s father Amarnath. His father said that Neeraj’s meteoric rise in the last six months had become a topic of conversation in his hometown, Kanpur.

Neeraj, who had studied mass communication from an institute in Noida, had come to Mumbai for work. “He first worked for an ad agency but was later unable to find work. However, in January he got a job with DJ Creations,” said Amarnath.

He went on to work for Shreyas Creations, Balaji, Cinevista and then Adlabs Synergy. “With each new job his salary and responsibilities increased,” said Amarnath. He and wife Nirmala used to speak to Neeraj twice every day. “He would call us without fail in the morning before work and again at 11 in the night,” said Amarnath.

The parents last spoke to him on May 6 after which their calls went unanswered. The desperate parents then flew to Mumbai on May 8 and since then Amarnath had been doing the rounds of police stations, hospitals, beaches, jails and crematoriums.

Amarnath had also made posters of his son and pasted them across Malad and Andheri.

Unhappy Re: Love, Betrayal, Sex, Murder & Gore

The parents of the victim break down yet helpless.

Quote:

Please let us see his face

When they arrived at the Malad police station at 11.45 am to record their statement, Amarnath and Nirmala Grover looked composed. For the next three hours they patiently told the cops all they knew about their son Neeraj's stint in Mumbai.

At 3 pm, they stepped out for a break and confronted any parents' worst nightmare: their son's killer. As Maria Susairaj and M L Jerome Matthew came in, their heads covered Nirmala Grover's composure broke. "Why are their faces covered? Did they cover their faces when they murdered my son cruelly?" she screamed. Inside the police station the two kept staring at Matthew and at one point pleaded to see his face just once. To know what their son last looked at as he confronted his own death.

Despite their pleading the police turned down their request leaving a by-now broken Amarnath to say, "Even their lives have been destroyed. How could they be so brutal?"

It's a question an entire city is asking.

Bright careers destroyed for good.

Quote:

In Cold Blood

Emile Jerome Mathew, a bright Navy officer, seemed to have everything going for him. So did Neeraj Grover, a successful TV producer. Mariah Susairaj had her sights set firmly on Bollywood. But the three got entangled in a messy love triangle, for which Grover paid with his life.

MUMBAI/MYSORE, MAY 25: Mariah Monica Susairaj, 27, an ambitious starlet from the quiet city of Mysore, came to Mumbai with dreams of making it big in tele-serials. She spent months on the lookout for that elusive break, till finally she met a man who held out the promise of stardom for her.

On May 21, photographs of the Kannada movie actress were flashed on television screens across the nation, but for all the wrong reasons — the Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch had arrested her in one of the most gruesome murder cases to have rocked the city.

With her arrest, the police claim to have cracked the case of the mysterious disappearance of Neeraj Amarnath Grover, a 25-year-old top executive at Synergy Adlabs who earlier worked as creative head at Balaji Telefilms. Susairaj’s confessions led the police to the skeletal remains of Grover in an isolated spot on the outskirts of the city, a fortnight after Grover’s father had reported him missing. Susairaj’s boyfriend from Mysore, Emile Jerome Mathew, a 25-year-old Navy lieutenant posted in Kochi, was arrested for stabbing Grover in a fit of jealousy and rage.

What sent chills down the spine was the cold-blooded nature of the crime. According to the police, shortly after the murder, Mathew and Susairaj had sex, following which Grover’s body was chopped into several small pieces with a kitchen knife and stashed in three duffel bags that were later burnt by the lovers.

Investigations began after Grover’s father approached the Malad police station to file a missing complaint on May 7. Police say Susairaj came to Mumbai in October 2007 and did an acting course. She then went to Bangalore, and acted in four Kannada films, before returning to Mumbai looking for roles in tele-serials. It was then that she met Grover, a talented, young executive in the television industry.

After shifting to Mumbai from Kanpur in January 2007, he worked with two firms before getting a call from Balaji Productions, where he was co-producer in a few serials. Weeks before the murder, he joined Synergy Adlabs, where he was the assistant creative head of the Shah Rukh Khan show, Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai.

Crime Branch officers say Susairaj befriended Grover and the two started “seeing each other”. “She approached Grover with her portfolio, and the two got intimate through SMSes and meeting at coffee shops. Enquiries have revealed that Grover had promised her a role in Mahabharat, a new tele-serial. He had told his friends that he was in love with Susairaj. However, when we interrogated her, Susairaj claimed that it was a purely one-sided affair,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

On the night of May 6, Grover landed up at Dheeraj Solitaire Building in Malad (West), where Susairaj was shifting into a one-bedroom rented flat that day. He said he would help her move her belongings. While the two were chatting, Susairaj is said to have received a call on her mobile phone from Mathew, who overheard Grover asking her, “Is that your boyfriend?”

Mathew and Susairaj had known each other from their schooldays in St. Matthias School in Mysore. Their friends say they find it hard to believe that Mathew, who was only last year felicitated by former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and Susairaj, with a bright future in dancing and acting, could be accused of such a crime. Susairaj’s family, who are builders, are known to be influential in Mysore but have locked their house to rush to Mumbai. Her uncle, Shantu Nessun, was elected a municipal corporator just six months ago.

A neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous, said “Monica’s father is well known in the Christian community. Their family has built several Christian schools and churches in the city. They are good people, who have gone out of their way to help others in Mysore.”

Kavita, Susairaj’s friend in school, says she was easily the best Bharatnatyam dancer, while Mathew, though an introvert, was exceptional in academics and was the school captain. “I knew them when she was in Class 10 and Mathew was in Class 7. They were friends then. The murder and their arrest have deeply shaken us, especially since Jerome had a great career in the Navy,” said Kavita.

An excellent dancer, singer and performer, Susairaj always wanted to work in films. She joined a BA Journalism course in Mysore in 1999 but did not complete it as she “was busy modelling”. Susairaj’s friends also recall that she trained under the legendary classical dancer Vasundhara Doraiswamy.

Mathew, the son of a retired bank clerk, was a newly commissioned officer in the Navy and was seen as a “bright youngster with a brilliant future”, who even won a gold medal for topping his course at the Naval Engineering College at INS Shivaji in Lonavala. His friends in the Naval circuit say that the officer and Susaira used to frequent parties and social events in Mumbai.

“Mathew knew about Grover, but the two had never met or spoken. Susairaj had told Mathew that Grover had a soft corner for her but that she did not feel the same. She maintained this during her interrogation as well. However, Susairaj and Grover were going around and the two had sex the night before the murder,” said Joint Commissioner Maria.

When Mathew found out that Grover was in Susairaj’s house that night, he asked her to get him to leave immediately, to which she said he would leave after helping her move in. He made two more calls on Susairaj’s phone but when he found the phone switched off, he called on Grover’s cellphone and asked him to leave.

Grover, however, stayed over at Susairaj’s flat and the two apparently went to sleep around 4 a.m. Three hours later, Susairaj answered the doorbell only to find Mathew at her doorstep. He had taken a 3:45 a.m. Air India flight to Mumbai and headed straight to her house.

“Mathew walked into her bedroom and found Grover there. He woke him up and the two fought bitterly before Mathew got a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him in the chest. He then attacked him several times till he was dead. The whole thing was over in 10 to 15 minutes. Mathew then slapped Susairaj once or twice, after which they had sex. They then decided on the best way to get rid of Grover’s body,” said Maria.

Around noon, Susairaj went to Hypercity Mall and bought two large bags, a large bread-knife, air fresheners, and new drapes to replace the blood stained ones. It had been decided that she would pay by cash but when she fell short of Rs 800 on a purchase of Rs 2,000, she used her debit card.

“Mathew then dragged Grover’s body to the bathroom, where he used the bread knife to chop the body into several pieces. He handed each piece to Susaira, who placed them in the bags. This went on for over three hours and finally, they also put their blood stained clothes in the bags,” said Maria.

Susairaj then called a choreographer friend and on some pretext, borrowed his Hyundai Santro. Mathew and Susairaj went to the friend’s house in an autorickshaw and returned in the car after picking up petrol in a jerry-can. After reaching home, they carried the three bags down by lift, and loaded them into the car. Susairaj introduced Mathew as her friend to the building watchman.

“While training on the INS Shivaji at Lonavla, Mathew had made several trips from Mumbai to Daman and Diu in the past and knew of several isolated forested areas on the way. Mathew and Susairaj drove around for about three hours before finding an isolated spot in Manor, Thane (Rural). They dumped the bags there, doused them with petrol and burnt them,” said Maria.

In the evening, when Grover’s friends landed up at Susairaj’s house, looking for him, she told them that he had left. She gave them his mobile phone, saying Grover had forgotten to take it. She then accompanied Grover’s friends to Malad police station to report him missing. The next day, Susairaj got her entire flat repainted. When Mathew and Susairaj were called to the Malad police station that day, Mathew told them that he was in the city for a training exercise. By then, Naval authorities in Kochi had declared him missing.

“On May 12, Susaira and four friends came to my office. They asked me for help in tracking Grover. After they introduced themselves, I told Susaira that she had nearly ended my search as my prime suspect was sitting in front of me. Although she denied her role initially, she eventually broke down and told us everything,” said Maria.

Navy officer confesses to media exec's murder

MUMBAI: Naval lieutenant Jerome Matthew told investigators on Thursday that the reason he had murdered media executive Neeraj Grover was because he had found him nude in his girlfriend's Malad home.

Matthew and his girlfriend, Kannada actress Maria Susairaj, have been arrested for killing Grover and disposing of the body in the jungles of Manor after stuffing the chopped body parts into three bags. Matthew said that when he had phoned Susairaj on May 6, she told him that Grover was helping her move into her new apartment at Dheeraj Solitaire building and would leave in a few hours.

But when Matthew flew into Mumbai the next morning, he said he was shocked when Susairaj opened the door in a skimpy outfit. Matthew walked straight into her bedroom and found Grover in the nude.

"Matthew was consumed with jealousy and rage as he realised what was happening behind his back. He headed straight to the kitchen and returned with a knife. The two men had a scuffle and Matthew eventually overpowered Grover, stabbing him several times," a senior crime branch officer said. Matthew then slapped Susairaj hard across her face, according to the police.

Susairaj apparently told Matthew that she had not slept with Grover willingly. The couple then had consensual sex twice in the same flat, even as the body lay in a pool of blood, police said, refuting claims that Matthew had raped her after the murder.

"Matthew had maintained a stiff silence ever since he was brought to Mumbai from Kochi's navy headquarters. He broke down only late on Thursday night, when he was brought to the crime branch for interrogation. He has been weeping for hours," an officer said.

Matthew had never met Grover before. Matthew was taught techniques of man-to-man combat and how to use a dagger as part of his naval training. He put his skills to use to overpower Grover.

Susairaj used her credit card to shop for a knife and three bags from a local mall, since she had run out of cash, police said.

Matthew then used this new knife to chop Grover's body to pieces and stuff it into the three bags.

Incidentally, crime branch chief, Rakesh Maria, had smelt a rat when he read a report in the TOI about Grover going missing. "Grover had a stable career and a good life.

There seemed a low probability of his going missing just like that," Maria said. Grover's parents, who came down from UP to look for their missing son, met Maria on May 9.

Barely three days later, Susairaj herself came to meet Maria with her brother and three of Grover's friends. "She requested me to look into the case personally. But I told her upfront that she was my 'suspect number 1'. After her arrest, she admitted to her role in the crime," he said.

Re: Love, Betrayal, Sex, Murder & Gore

I believe this is what happened. The boyfriend comes home and sees that his girl is fucking this guy, gets really mad and starts throwing punches at the other guy. The other guy retaliates and returns some ghoosas too, especially with the girl around. The BF in a fit of rage grabs a knife and accidentally kills the guy. Either one of the guys could have died. It just happened so that the 'good guy' got killed. Now the guy is dead, what do you do? If it were you, what would you do? Call the cops? Hell no. So they think of a way to dispose off the body. The BF gathers some courage and manages to chop the body off. It's all circumstantial, we might do the same too, given the circumstances. Then they somehow manage to get rid of the body and think everything is all cool now. The girl screws it up somehow the next day, talking to the guys friends, the cops, whoever. They get caught.

In all of this mess, the chick is the one who needs to get a good kick on her ass. More than anybody else, she is the one responsible for all the brouhaha. Had she not screwed around for her own personal reasons, the poor guy could have a lived a few more years I feel sorry for the navy officer too.

Moral of the story is, keep your head straight however mad you're at someone, whatever the reason might be, even if he's screwing your chick, it's ok, you at least get a second chance

Re: Love, Betrayal, Sex, Murder & Gore

My sympathies are more for the Navy officer Matthew. He was known to his Navy colleagues, as a bright, intelligent guy & a gold medallist topper at the Naval Engineering College at INS Shivaji, Lonavala with a felicitation too received from former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The guy had a bright promising future that’s now down the drain.

From the news, what appears is that the guy loved Maria too much & couldn’t stand the thought of another man being with her alone in the night hour. When his calls from Cochin went unanswered, he sensed what the slut Maria was doing then. The guy flew down to Bombay with rage filled jealousy & his assumptions proved to be true when he saw the naked Neeraj in his girlfriend’s bedroom. Defence personnels are no angels or sissies. Any possessive guy on seeing his girlfriend cheating on him this manner is bound to blow his top off. The uncontrollable rage did the rest.

The guy should’ve stayed back where he was & said “To hell with the whore!” & looked for greener pastures. Why ruin his life for this worthless two timing slut? Would Maria have been faithful to him even if these two had escaped the clutches of the law? Bull!! All the rage proved to be of no use. A life lost & careers destroyed.

While I feel sympathetic for the deceased’s parents who lost their only son, the deceased was no angel, but a known flirt with women. (Read here: It looks like one of his flings cost him his life. — Kavita Shyam, television correspondent) So he was only using Maria for his sexual needs. Not much sympathy for him.

However this ugly crime could have been best avoided had the Navy officer stayed put in Cochin & concentrated on his career than bother about his cheating girlfriend.

My sympathies are NOT with the Mathew guy. That is because all females have the right to decide whose lund they like at any time any day. If a male cannot stand that he has the right to seek a divorce (if already married) or to retaliate in other non-physical ways to the female.

However, the male should not directly attack other male that was invited by the female, except when that invited male attacks first.

The bottomline is that nobody has right to kill/maim other guy just because his wife is in bed with the other guy (except for rape or wife not in proper physical or mental condition to give consent)

Although I understand your point of view, (i.e. the guy getting enraged and killing Grover) but how do you explain this dude having sex with Susairaj twice next to a dead body? I mean what kind of sick Psycho would do such a thing? Looks like something is seriously wrong with the guy mentally and this act was a sick twisted way of asserting his hold over susairaj...

Looks like you have never any of those hollywood/bollywood movies... where the hero/heroine fight each other... and the passion is so strong that they end up making love. Yup... the ending of this story is tragic... instead of fighting and killing each other... this Matthew guy should have just joined in. Just imagine the result then... nobody dies... nobody throws their life away... and there is more love in the world

I dont know whom to rep ... because all of you sound logical ... and convincing ... but then in a fit of rage, anything seems justifiable ...

I think you are allowed to rep as many people as you like....just not as often as you'd like

The aftermath part of the murder that includes the sex part, planning the disposal of the body, hacking & chopping to small bits is indeed sick to the extreme.
