Am hearing the name of this fruit for the first time. However, curiosity got the better of me and I googled on this fruit.....amazing.....found a lot of results, however, just picked a few lines of info. abt this fruit.

Kokum or cocum. A variety of plum, pitted and dried. Prune-like and very sour. Also known in Malayan as mangosteen.

The fruit is known in India by various names -- including Bindin, Biran, Bhinda, Kokum, Katambi, Ratamba or Amsol. In the English language, it is known by various names, such as mangosteen, wild mangosteen, or red mango.

Malaysia is rich in fruits especially mangosteen. It tastes somewhat like lichi. However, the `king of Malaysian fruit' is the durriyan, Resembling the jack fruit it tastes like heaven and smells like hell. In fact, all hotels forbid guests from bringing the fruit on the premises. One is advised against having alcohol after eating the fruit for it can cause heart attack. It's that hot.

About Mangosteen tree :
Garcinia mangostena;
Mangosteen; H- Mangustan.

Guttiferae; Considered as native of straits and cultivated in Madras and Burma.

Wood yellowish red to brick red, hard; This is the tree which yields the Mangosteen fruit, considered by many as finest fruit of the Eastern tropics. The rind of the fruit is used in tanning and as a medicine.

Used in gujarati daal in dried form as a souring agent (in place of lime or tamarind or aamchur)

Mangosteen info Thanks

Thanks everyone for posting "Mangosteen" Info.
If it is "Kokum" then we use it in Home made "Daal" everyday. I just did not know it.
I can go to Patel Bros shop & see if they have Juice also.
We do not drink "Kokum" Juice at home.
But Today at work I tasted this Juice
about an Ounce as it is promoted at real high $ price/ bottle.Taste tangy, not real sweet but one can drink Oz or two ,but not 8oz in glass.
I'll explore liitle more.Stay tuned...
Thanks again.

Manosteen not Kokum

It seems may be Mangosteen is not equivalent to or Kokum.
Kokum & Kokum Phool/flower has small pits & size is smaller.
Mangosteen is about size of tangerine.
I was unable to post Pics here .

Re: Mangosteen fruit

Mangosteen is also a medicinal plant. It's been used for thousands of years to help with pain and inflammation. You can get the juice that includes the entire fruit from just about anywhere on the market, but the best one is the purest one.
