Blast in Peshawar; 20 dead, several injured

Blast in Peshawar; 20 dead, several injured

ISLAMABAD: At least 20 people, including three children, were killed and about 40 others injured in a powerful bomb blast targeting a prayer hall of the minority shias in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Friday.

The blast took place outside an Imambargah in the congested Kucha Risaldar area of the walled part of Peshawar.

Local TV channels reported that at least 20 people died in the blast which occurred in the evening hours when Shia shoppers crowded the area ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival.

About 25-30 kg of explosives was used in the huge blast, which damaged nearby houses, police said. The explosion also triggered a fire in shops and warehouses in the area and caused a power outage, hampering rescue work.

The explosives were believed to have been hidden inside a vehicle. The blast also damaged windowpanes over a wide area.

Reports said three children and four women were among the dead. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals where emergency has been declared.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. There have been several instances of Shia prayer halls being targeted in Peshawar and other parts of the North West Frontier Province in the past few months.

At least six people were killed and five others injured in a suspected suicide attack in a busy market in the restive northwestern Aurakzai tribal region on Friday morning.

That attack too occurred when the market was packed with people shopping ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha. There was also a rush of people for the Friday prayers.

Officials said it was believed that a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden vehicle after it was stopped at a check post set up by local tribesmen to prevent the entry of militants into Kalaya, the main town of Aurakzai agency, a region which witnessed sectarian clashes in recent months.

In Peshwar, the blast caused a five-foot deep crater. The narrow lanes of the bazaar were littered with limbs and charred bodies. Ambulances rushed to the area to take the injured, including a number of women and children, to hospitals.

Pakistan is reeling from a spate of violence linked to a major military offensive against al-Qaida and Taliban militants operating in its troubled tribal belt bordering Afghanistan. More than 1,500 people have died in the past 16 months in bomb blasts and suicide attacks.

Exactly what i was thinking. It is a nice coincidence that there was a blast in Pukistan right about mumbai blast. Assholes would have set it up themselves...and if not then these assholes deserve it. Sala mofos cant keep their own country clean. Terrorism is double sided sword, now it is time for Haglistan(pakistan) to pay for what seeds they have grown.

No this is handiwork of ISI and Pak government, to show to the world that even they are affected by terrorism and hence they are innocent of the Mumbai attacks.

We are Indians. We're not pigs. Let's avoid the temptation to wallow in the shit just cause they do. To each his or her own. We have thousands of years of culture of kindness, mercy, and forgiveness ... they don't.

I cannot help but have sympathy for Pakistanis ... they have been brainwashed for so long that they can no longer distinguish between right and wrong.

The truth ... unfortunately ... is that India cannot prosper alone. Our future and peaceful existence is entwined with that of our immediate neighbors. Cannot shake them off ... how hard we try.

Jealousy and envy comes in to play ... they won't let India live in peace and prosper while wallowing in the shit of their own creation.

The thousands of years of culture that you refer to Sir, actually originated in the area which is now mostly in Pakistan...Mohenjadaro and Harappa are not ''Made in India'' anymore...so if anything pakis have the edge there..Sir

Sir the creationsof their failure which shall be known as your future neighbours that you shall peacefully intertwine(?)with shall include

the Sovereign Tribal Tentublic(tent republic) of Waziristan

Sardari Sai-garh feudocracy(feudal democracy) of Sindhistan

Kulcha Keema testocracy(testosterone autocracy) of saadha panjabistan

Bhookhay Nangay hills and valleys heavenly kingdon of pahaad-istan

Their flags, leaders and coats of arms shall be provided shortly Sir and there shall be a live telecast of their constitutions being framed too...for you to frame your policies accordingly..

I look forward to your working with their thousands and your many thousands of years of cultural formation and peace making experience Sir..

Thankyou Sir...

I bet this was the same kind of thinking that lead our previous eunuch PM I K Gujral to wind up RAW operations in Pakiland in 1997 and to restrict RAW from performing such foreign ops. The result is there for us today where pukis operate without the fear of reprecussions on their civilians! with all due respect tantuji, this so-called moral highstand that you want Indians to take is a big load of hogwash that doesnt stop pukis from bleeding us with a thousand cuts. If UPA or NDA (if it comes to power next year) has any balls, they should immediately authorize RAW to inflict similar devastations on their civilian populations too! Tantuji, god-forbid if something similar happens to someone close to you, I am sure all these non-violence, moral superiority BS goes out of the window. Believe me!

Re: Blast in Peshawar; 20 dead, several injured

I fully agree with Ramesh, the policy with Pakistan and BanglaDesh should be "Complete insulation". We can involve menaingfully with Chinese. Everybody should appreciate that 2001-2004 when we were not talking much with Pakistan and have insulated us ,there was much peace. Stop this Bull Shit of People to People contact. Those who can't live without it like Mahesh Bhatt,Kuldip Nayyar,Barkha Dut could cross border and settle there.

Same thing about all Bengalis on Eastern Border, those who can't get over narowwmindedness of language and love for Jol-Bhath can convert and get lost to Bangladesh for ever.

Pakistan and Bangladesh can't teach us anything meaningful. If you want good neighbourship it should always be China,Nepal,Lanka,Bhutan,Burma .

How many battles in our 10000 year history we have fought with China(only 1 -Nehru's stupidity), Srilanka(1 - Ravan's Arrogance ). Why do we have to look for Pak and Bangladesh for good neighbours. our country's people should strengthen their heart.

Believe me except for Kebab, tandoori chicken and Gazals Srilankans,Chinese(Buddhist ones) are more similar to us.

So No War no love should be policy.

Red face Re: Blast in Peshawar; 20 dead, several injured

Pakistan is already blaming India for this attack. In this same thread I had said that ISI must have done this to show the world that Pakistan also suffers from terrorism. BUt now they are hinting that India did it
Quote:
Death toll from Pakistan car bombing rises to 29

Dec 5, 11:49 PM (ET)

By RIAZ KHAN

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - The death toll from an overnight car bombing rose to 29 in northwest Pakistan, unnerving a region already dangerously on edge following the attacks on India's commercial capital, police and doctors said Saturday.

About 100 people were also wounded Friday when the bomb went off near Peshawar's famed Storytellers Bazaar, wrecking a Shiite Muslim mosque and a hotel and setting a string of vehicles and shops ablaze, said Mohammed Khan, a local police official.

Television footage showed survivors frantically carrying bloodied victims through the rubble to private cars and ambulances as fire crews sought to douse the flames.

Neither the motive nor the culprits behind the blast were clear. But provincial government chief Haider Khan Hoti said "external forces" could be to blame - a comment understood in Pakistan to mean India.

Sahib Khan, a doctor at a main hospital said Saturday that they received 20 bodies after the blast, while another nine injured died overnight. He said some of the injured were still in critical condition.

Further adding to the tension, a suspected U.S. missile strike reportedly killed three people in a stronghold of the Taliban and al-Qaida near the border with Afghanistan.

Escalating violence is destabilizing Pakistan's northwest just as the country faces accusations from archrival India that the gunmen behind the carnage in Mumbai last week were trained in Pakistan and steered by militants based there.

The provincial police chief, Malik Naveed Khan, said the bomb seemed to contain chemicals designed to spread fire.

Pakistan and the United States have stepped up operations against Taliban and al-Qaida strongholds in the northwest to curb mounting attacks launched from there on targets in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

There have been more than 30 suspected U.S. missile strikes since August, including one on Friday in the North Waziristan region, part of Pakistan's wild tribal belt viewed as possible hiding place for Osama bin Laden.

Three Pakistani intelligence officials told The Associated Press that one missile hit a house in the village of Khushali Turikhel and another landed in a field.

The officials, who cited reports from agents and informants in the area, said three people were killed and two others injured, however the identity of the victims was not known.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on the record to media.

The missiles are apparently fired from drone aircraft that take off from Afghanistan. U.S. officials rarely confirm or deny responsibility though American leaders have said the attacks have killed several militant leaders this year.

Insurgents have responded with an onslaught of gun and bomb attacks that have sparked concern about the possible disruption of a key supply line for NATO and U.S. troops that cuts through Peshawar and the Khyber Pass into Afghanistan.
