LK Advani evasive on being BJP's PM choice in 2014 polls

NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader LK Advani was on Wednesday evasive over the issue of his candidature for prime minister's post, saying the Jana Sangh and BJP have given him much more than the PM's post.

What the country has given me is bigger than the post of Prime Minister, Advani said.

The BJP leader said he was happy being part of the party.

"From the RSS, to the Jan Sangh and to the BJP, I am happier to be a part of the party, than being Prime Minister," Advani replied when he was asked if he is the BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

LK Advani reached Nagpur on Wednesday morning for a meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at the Sangh headquarters here.

Talking to reporters, Advani said he had come to Nagpur to meet party president Nitin Gadkari who had undergone a small operation besides the RSS chief.

Advani had announced his yatra plan on the last day of the monsoon session of Parliament earlier this month. The BJP parliamentary board has endorsed the senior leader's decision, but there has been no discussion with the Sangh on it yet. Advani is, therefore, expected to discuss plans for the yatra as well as the current political scenario in the country with Bhagwat.

The Sangh has backed all the five earlier yatras that Advani has undertaken. It is expected to support his yatra this time too since it is against the issue of corruption. When Anna Hazare had started his movement, the RSS had declared that it would back any campaign against graft. Advani's yatra is likely to begin on October 11, the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan.

Re: Narendra Modi : Next BJP PM Candidate?

Well, this is what I wanted to say in my earlier post, that 2014 is too far away. That the US report may simply sow the seeds of discord in BJP, or give Namo and is courtiers a bloated head.

Did Narendra Modi peak too early? Opinions differ

TNN | Sep 21, 2011, 07.45PM IST

Like a long distance runner who "kicks" too early and fades away at the finish, has Narendra Modi's three-day fast lost him the bid for the NDA's PM candidate?

Two of The Times of India Group's newspapers had different views on the subject in their news analyses, with The Economic Times on Tuesday saying that the Gujarat chief minister's attempt had "backfires as key allies frown at the idea". However, the next day, The Times of India 's news analysis was nowhere as definitive and said that both Modi and LK Advani were still "gauging" their prime ministerial prospects -adding however, that these attempts threatened to "derail the BJP's focus on price rise and corruption".

ET 's news analysis in its closely read political pages said that Modi's fast was aimed at "smoothening the rough edges of his political persona and marshalling support for catapulting him to the national stage". However, it said that his "limitations" in becoming the anchor of an anti-Congress coalition had been "revealed" given the opposition to him from JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar; moreover, Modi's fast had added to the friction in the BJP's alliance with the Shiv Sena. Pointing out that the BJP would require powerful regional players for realizing its national ambitions, the newspaper concluded that "if the current mood is anything to go by, only a more reconciling personality can emerge as an acceptable NDA leader".

In contrast, however, TOI 's news analysis on Wednesday --"LK yatra, Modi show cast shadow on BJP executive" --was nowhere as definitive, and merely quoted BJP sources as admitting that the fast had been a "distraction the party could do without". The article did not write off Modi as a potential PM candidate from the NDA, but did say that his bid to break from the pack in the BJP's prime ministerial race "seems too hasty, just as the sudden sadhbhavna makeover, seems unconvincing".

The article instead concentrated on both Modi's and Advani's plans casting a shadow on the BJP's attempt to keep the spotlight on Congress's weak spots like graft, inflation, terrorism - issues which it had earlier calculated, would find broad support from non-UPA parties ranging from the Left to regional outfits.

Question Twist in the tale?

Advani gives it back to Modi

AHMEDABAD: Turbulence is only mounting in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after their octogenarian leader and prime ministerial aspirant Lal Krishna Advani was candidly told by Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh ( RSS) to opt out of power politics and work for the party as only a mentor.

It appears that Sangh supremo Mohan Bhagwat also suggested to Advani, when the two met in Nagpur on Wednesday for clearance from the Sangh Parivar for the rathyatra against corruption, that leaders like Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi should not contest elections any more and thus pave the way for Generation Next.

Hurt by this snub which, he felt, was orchestrated by Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, Advani has decided to dissociate himself from day-to-day party rituals. But now that he does not need Modi's help to win from Gandhinagar, he is sending signals back to his constituency.

To begin with, he will break the tradition of 20 years on September 25 of visiting Somnath from where, on this day, he started his first rathyatra to Ayodhya and went on to become deputy PM. This has caught Modi by surprise because on this very day, he had planned a huge rally outside Ahmedabad. It was planned in such a way that Advani would first visit Somnath and then fly down to Ahmedabad to address the rally, where Modi would have launched his war for the governor's recall over Lokayukta row. Now that Advani is not coming, Modi isn't inviting anyone else.

Not only has Advani decided not to be in Gujarat on September 25, for the first time since 1990, his office has also sent a request to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to flag off his rathyatra from Sitabdiara in Saran, Bihar, the birthplace of Jay Prakash Narayan. All BJP chief ministers, including Modi, have been invited to this location which was suggested by Modi, even as Advani's choices were Porbandar and Karamsad. Nitish's office, however, has not responded to BJP's request yet. The event is scheduled for October 11, JP's birthday. BJP insiders say Advani was also hurt by Modi's delay in giving nod for the rathyatra's launch in Gujarat and, instead, embarking on a three-day fast to brazenly proclaim his leadership.

Describing his absence at Somnath as "very symbolic", an Advani aide said, "I don't think the old man will give up so easily. In 2014, when the next elections will be held, he will be 86. He is very fit and there is likelihood of possible allies like Naveen Patnaik, Chandrababu Naidu, Ajit Singh, Om Prakash Chautala, Jaganmohan Reddy and others accepting him as a leader than anyone else."

Minority appeasement in Bharat means the lives of innocent Sikhs or Hindus are absolutely of no use. While Nitish Kumar the much vaunted CM of Bihar keeps quiet when Bihari labourers are gunned down by ULFA in Assam or when Bihari labourers are beaten up in Maharashtra he sent a police team to Gujarat to investigate the advertisement in which he was shown with Narendra Modi. No one talks about the hundreds of innocent Sikhs who were brutally butchered in 1984 or the fact that Congress leaders who actually lead mobs to do the cowardly deeds roam free and the media does not even talk about this event. Rajiv Gandhi`s statement about tree falling etc is the icing on the cake. Shame, shame, utter shame is all I can say.

Trust me a day might come when the fake Gandhis are done to like the Romanovs in Russia. I suggest you read the comments section in a national daily like TOI to gauge the mood of the average person.
