Why I Left India (Again)

Read this article written by a desi techie who moved back to India from Bay area and then this chicken along with quitter family went back to CA again.. prolly wifey couldn't handle in-laws and relatives..

Quote:
Why I Left India (Again)

The Hindi movie on my “return to India” flight on Dec. 13th, 2006 was “Swades” (literally: “My country,” a story about a patriotic NASA engineer who returns to India to help improve his homeland).

The idea that you can fix India’s problems by adding more people to it — even smart people — is highly suspect. No, I wasn’t going back to fix things; I was leaving the U.S. to go back to Shri Thomas Friedman’s India: an India that offered global companies, continental food, international schools and domestic help; an India that offered freedom from outsourcing and George W. Bush.

I was excited about moving to India and I thought I had the right expectations—after being away for eleven years (I grew up in Mumbai), I was prepared for India to feel less like home and more like the flight’s “Indian vegetarian meal”: visually familiar but viscerally alien.

Re: Why I Left India (Again)

WHat's so wrong about it? Even today, despite all the India shining, you get nothing for your taxes. Roads are as shitty, newly constructed flyovers develop potholes within a couple of months and the infrastructure sucks big time. Instead of forging full steam ahead with civilian nuclear power, there are more court petitions to stop building power plants while 'enjoying' load shedding

Lets face it, India is nice as a vacation to visit family and friends once every year or couple of years. If you dont want stupid unnecessary hassles like long commute times, shitty roads, no basic infrastructure then do not return to India.

Thumbs up Re: Why I Left India (Again)

Sad story

It's horrible that once you settle outside India.......it is not easy to come back & start a new life in your home country.

Sometimes relatives or dependents do not help to let you stay long there too.

Just think about your returning future in India & plan the same way.

Whats wrong with you? You got married and didn't even bother to consult those among us who have committed the mistake? You gave up precious bachelorhood for a woman? You crazy or something? You ugly ... couldn't get nothing for free? Yes, you must be ugly to be so desperate. Have you really gotten married or still contemplating? I suggest you reconsider. Look at our Ashdocji ... each weekend a new girlfriend and a new movie. Don't you envy him?

Congrats ... we wish you both all the happiness in life. Nothing like your own woman to grow old with. Cherish her. All the best.

Re: Why I Left India (Again)

Copy/paste from the link ...

Our move was a success by any metric. My wife and I are software professionals, and our careers flourished at an Indian rate of growth (R.I.P., “Hindu rate of growth”). Our daughter attended a preschool in Bangalore whose quality matched any in the Bay Area. Our three-bedroom flat in Defence Colony, Indiranagar,

Bold ... what does author mean?

Answers to 2 simple questions would have sufficed ...

Number of legislatures with criminal records/cases has increased steadily after each election since the times of Late Indira Gandhi. Do you see Indian voters taking responsibility in next 20 or 30 years? Answer is an emphatic NO.

Do you want your children to grow up in one of the world's most corrupt country ruled by politicians with criminal cases pending? Answer is an emphatic NO.

No other explanation is required or necessary.

Re: Why I Left India (Again)

I am thinking the author was too hard on himself ... Knowing about the gross realities, he still tried his best to change it ... but who has changed it ... at best, the same people you are trying to change, bring you to their level and then it seems weird and pathetic to argue at that level ...

I mean, if he knew he can sweet talk the rikshawala and be OK about it, he should be OK with the other extreme too ... What is wrong, not all rikshawallas can be sweettalked, just as not all personal drivers or bais are scammers ...

and what about amoebaisis ... Yes kids cant handle it and definetly not at an age of preschool ... it takes time to build up an immune system ... hell it takes time to go without a flu shot in the US of A ... I mean, the grind that he talks about (esp when he is from Mumbai) is a very usual phenomenon ... try catching the morning train during the office hours to Churchgate ... things have changed, new trains do get added, but population is not going to decrease, this is well known ... So I am not surprised ...

He talked about three classes of Returning Indians ... the bullock-cart NRIs, the scooter NRIs, and the airport NRIs ... what he forgets is that there is only one type: the experimental types and its opposite, the determined types ... if you are in an experimental mode even in the US, you would want to leave even after staying for 4 years ... Every single day, the thought passes in my mind, as to what the heck am I doing here? ... that thought is not going to change even if you are in the laps of the Swedish queen ...

Many of my friends have returned back to India. They went with a purpose and that purpose was very determined and with a realistic idea of what India will bring ... You dont go with a Swades film running at the back of your mind or with Sri Sri Friedman's idea of what India is all about? Never ...

Re: Why I Left India (Again)

When you go to India, you have to know what is in store for you. And if you go to a specific city you need to know what that city has in store for you. e.g. the unruly traffic in Hyderabad, Vulgar dislay of wealth in Delhi, Auto wallas in Chennai, etc.
