Talking Diwali celebrated in White House

Diwali celebrations were held in the White House, the first festival to be marked after US President George W Bush's re-election.

Several Indian community leaders were invited to attend the festivities on Wednesday. They explained the significance of the festival of lights.

Former US ambassador to India and a senior official in the National Security Council Robert Blackwill assured the Indian community that President Bush plans to visit India next year.

Diwali was celebrated in the White House for the first time last year after the US President agreed to hold the festivities following a long standing demand by the Indian community.

The White House last year made it a point of marking the national days or special occasions for each community -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and other who form the mosaic of America's multi-racial society.

I wish Bush had prayed to Mahalakshmi and asked for help with soaring deficit and falling dollar.
