Thumbs up Two village girls win US scholarship

Two village girls win US scholarship

If there is a will, there is a way. Two poor girls have made it big by the virtue of their unflinching dedication to studies and hard work.

Karishma Randhve (18), a resident of Shirwal village in Satara district, and Anjani Lahane (18) from Mangaon village in Raigad district have been selected by the University of Cincinnati (UC), Ohio in the US, as maiden recipients of the Global Opportunity Scholarship. India is the first ever beneficiary country of the UC scholarship initiative.

While Karishma is a daughter of a labourer, Anjani’s father is a farmer. It’s a struggle for both the families to eke out a living. But that have not deterred their parents to educate these girls. The duo will receive full scholarships worth Rs67.50 lakh each to pursue their bachelor’s engineering degree at the UC.

The course will commence in September 2011. The director of international admissions at the UC, Jonathan Weller, is in India to escort these students to the US.

The duo was selected from 50 students short-listed for the scholarship from rural areas of Maharashtra. The selection process, which spread over 10 months, was carried out with the help of NGO Lend-A-Hand-India (LAHI).

After completing her primary education from Dnyansamvardhini High School in Shirwal,Karishma completed her plus two from Pune-based Laxmanrao Apte Prashala. She used to take tuitions to fund her studies.

Anjani did her plus two from a school at Mangaon. Both were felicitated on Monday at Karishma’s school. “I amhappy that I have got an opportunity to pursue my engineering studies,” said Karishma, who would be pursuing engineering in bio-medical stream. Like Karishma, Anjani too was thrilled to get such a break.

“I would like to come back and work for development,” said Anjani, who would be studying computer engineering.

Re: Two village girls win US scholarship

I wish these girls all the best and hope they can make full use of this opportunity.

I was on the similar terms. Why doesn't our Indian government make some arrangement like this? Provide scholarships to the good students who can study in US and can come back to India and work . It is not that Indian government has no money, could at least be used to some good cause.

I know that Indian government offers aid, but that is not good enough.

I heard of one guy long back in Nainital who got a scholarship of about 1.5 lakhs* or so to do MS in US. He bribed some clerk for a quarter of that amount to get thing moving. There can be a hundred schemes but all will end up in such a mess. So, the best o[tion is to getrid of all the schemes and Yojanas and reduce the tax rates. But then what will the Neta/Babu log have then???

*1 Dollar was slightly over 10 rupees then.

Re: Two village girls win US scholarship

Hope there is enough support on ground to make transition easy for two young girls, they will need it. Hope there is enough in funds for them to visit home once a year to renew ties with parents and environment. This is extremely important. Good luck to them.

India is full of young geniuses needing financial aid and encouragement ... too bad moderfrocking politicians, Bollywood chwtiyaas and Hijras, and Sons of biatches MOFO 12 of cricket steal it all.

What aid does Indian government offer and how many get to receive it after all the bribes have been paid?

Sunnyji ... don't you read or watch news? Hore Dickshit just gave away several crores to moderfrocking cricket players for winning some game. And moderfrocking billionaire cricket players took it! They took it? I don't recall reading them being human enough to refuse to accept money which was intended for poor children. Google for it.

I read badri jiii and we even had a thread here at EC on the topic. I was asking about funds specifically to study abroad.... groove the talent and make sure some of them stay in India.
High society ppl take care of themselves, what about middle and low society. If government provides them help, that will benefit India in long term.
But again, I am sure we have many such policies....but sadly they never reach a common man.

How can anything reach common man when existence of our society and culture rests upon exploitation of poor, needy, and disadvantaged?

Chinese are selfish too but when was the last time you read of them hoarding money in Swiss banks? Chinese make money overseas and remit back home to put up industries and finance educational institutions. Our Tatas, Birlas, Mahendras and rest of bastards make money in India but send millions of dollars in donations to alma matter overseas ... to Unis and colleges which don't need no money of a poor country. What have Tatas, Birlas, Mahendras and Ambhanis done for poor India and its education?

We are the scum of mother earth. We are a shameless people. We are morally corrupt to the core.
