Thumbs up Medals, London Olympics 2012

London Olympics final countdown begins.

The opening ceremony of the London Olympics is due to take place later after seven years of preparations.

The three-hour spectacle in the Olympic Stadium is expected to be viewed by a global TV audience of 1bn.

The final day of the torch relay will see the Olympic flame taken along the Thames on royal rowbarge Gloriana - and then used to light the cauldron that will shine during 16 days of sport.

The Games will see the biggest UK peacetime security operation mounted.

Organisers have released a video clip giving a sneak preview of Oscar winner Danny Boyle's opening ceremony, featuring groups in colourful stage outfits dancing to Tiger Feet by 1970s rock group Mud and cyclists with wings pedalling along to Come Together by the Beatles.

Europe's largest bell will ring inside the stadium at 21:00 BST at the start of the 27m extravaganza, featuring a cast of 10,000 volunteers and said to be a quirky take on British life.
Some 15,000 square metres of staging and 12,956 props will be used, and the event will boast a million-watt PA system using more than 500 speakers.

The crowd of about 80,000 will include the Queen and a host of dignitaries and celebrities.

As late as Thursday night, Games organisers said that the ceremony had not sold out and tickets in the two highest price categories, costing 2,012 and 1,600 were still available.

Earlier, the torch relay will make its way through the maze at Hampton Court, before it travels down the Thames.

The final torchbearer of the 70-day relay relay will be 22-year-old basketball player Amber Charles, who played a key role in London's winning bid and who will carry the flame in front of City Hall and Tower Bridge at approximately 12:45 BST.

The relay ends late in the evening with the lighting of the cauldron during the opening ceremony but the identity of the person who will take on the honour remains a mystery.

City Hall will form part of the final backdrop of the last stage of the torch relay
BBC sports editor David Bond said the millions of people who have lined the UK's streets to witness the passing of the torch relay reflect an enthusiasm and pride in the Games which has been growing over the last few weeks.

He said Games organisers have not experienced the sort of problems so many other host cities have endured but could find themselves under the spotlight if the transport network fails or if problems with venue security emerges.

The Queen and Prince Philip will host a Buckingham Palace reception for heads of state and government and an opening ceremony celebration concert featuring Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, Duran Duran and Paolo Nutini will be held in Hyde Park.

And the sporting action, which officially began on Wednesday with the women's football competition, continues with archery at Lord's cricket ground.

Re: London Olympics 2012

Not to split hair - but between 1 & 2 is 1.5. And its not possible to win 1.5 medals. You can essentially take out that option from your poll!!!

Re: London Olympics 2012.

did you guys see the girl in red top who walked around the stadium with the India contingent? frikking hell!

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/...102151482.html

The mystery woman who crashed India's athletes' parade has been identified as Madhura Nagendra, a postgraduate student from Bangalore.

Nagendra, who is studying for an MBA in London, came through an audition to earn a place as a dancer in the spectacular opening ceremony for London 2012.

But after taking her place among the thousands of other volunteer performers, she then decided to prolong her moment in the spotlight. She snuck in among the Indian athletes as they began their parade around the Olympic stadium on Friday night, taking a prominent place at the front of the group next to Beijing bronze medallist Sushil Kumar, who was the flag-bearer.

Millions of people across the world wondered who the woman in a red top and blue trousers was, with the Indian Olympic contingent outraged that their moment in the spotlight had been hijacked by what was then an unidentified mystery woman.

But back in India, her friends and family recognised her instantly.

"We knew she had been selected for the cultural programme after an audition. But we did not expect to see her with the contingent!" a former colleague of Nagendra's told The Hindu, before adding that he was not surprised that she had been involved in the ceremony.

"She was a fun-loving person and was very excited about having been selected to perform in the Olympics. Madhura had also shared her happiness on Facebook, where she said she felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

A college friend from London also recognised her, and told the Deccan Chronicle that she was "baffled seeing her with the Indian contingent".

Games chief Sebastian Coe explained that Nagendra had "got over-excited", prompting her audacious decision to join in the parade, cheekily adding that the security concerns are something that, "we will be looking at next time we have an opening ceremony".

Madhura's father K Nagendra apologised on behalf of his daughter - who has yet to speak publicly about her high-profile gatecrashing - and said that he thought she may have been asked to help out.

"From whatever I learnt and presume that she being an Indian, the London Olympics Organising Committee might also have selected her to 'take' the team inside the stadium. This might have hurt our team's feelings. I feel very sorry for that," Mr Nagendra told the Times of India.

Take action? Why, Sir ji? Poor woman ... let her enjoy her moment in the sunlight, er, I mean, spotlight. You want to send her to jail for her 15 minutes of fame? Tsk, tsk.

Re: London Olympics 2012

Consiprasey agenist India ... all the sports we Indians are good at have been removed from Olympics. For instance sport called "Grab the Loot' ... our politicians are guaranteed to win hundreds of gold medals.

Sachin Tendulkar alone can win no less than 36 gold medals if only cricket was included ... don't forget cry baby from Calcuatta, former captain. How about Azarudeena?

Hundreds of potential gold medals ... Konspiricy against India to deprive it of honors.
