Massive floods in Orissa!!!

NEW DELHI, India -- India will give one billion rupees to aid thousands of people marooned in its eastern state of Orissa after torrential rains set off flash floods.

"The situation is very serious... The prime minister has approved the immediate release of one billion rupees ($21.23 million)," cabinet spokesman Pramod Mahajan told reporters in the capital, New Delhi.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had asked the federal government for two billion rupees in relief for his state where floods have killed at least 23 people, washed away 4,000 houses and damaged 14,000 homes in the past 10 days.

Some 7,200 villages have been cut off and half a million people are believed to be marooned in different parts of India after the floods.

The largest dam in the eastern Indian state of Orissa was threatening to overflow as rivers rose to dangerously high levels following torrential rains.

The water level at the Hirakud dam had risen to less than a meter (three feet) short of its capacity due to rains in the catchment's area of the Mahanadi river that runs through the state.

"It's worse and going to get worse," Special Relief Commissioner H.K. Pande told Reuters.

Officials added there were quite a few breaches of the Mahanadi river and its tributaries.

Pande said all 48 sluice gates of Hirakud dam were opened and water levels were at an all-time high in Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur, two areas hammered by a cyclone that killed 10,000 people in 1999.

Weather an impediment
The rains in Orissa have been unusually heavy during the annual monsoon season, which begins in June and lasts until September. The state had received 84 percent more rain than usual between June 1 and July 11.

On Tuesday, army helicopters began dropping food packets to thousands of marooned people but intermittent heavy rain and poor visibility were hindering the relief flights.

Thousands evacuated
"The weather has been an impediment," Wing Commander Vivek Sawalkar told Reuters. One helicopter on its way to the Cuttack district was forced to turn back without dropping its relief cargo because of bad flying conditions.

Now the air force is the only lifeline.

One army relief column of 100 men had reached the state capital, Bhubaneswar, and another was on its way.

Last Friday, authorities evacuated 300,000 people from flood-hit coastal areas after raging rivers swamped parts of the state. The flooding has caused huge crop damage.

Elsewhere, 27 people were feared dead in landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Rudraprayag district of the northern state of Uttaranchal on Monday.

This is really tragic. After reading things like these, our own troubles start to seem so small and petty.

Such me kabhi kabhi lagta he, state like Bihar, Orisa kya special kismat likha ke laye he upar wale se, Its really bad news, but I think some of the state like orisa and few others having this kind of flood each alternate year and still govt approve One Billion Rs each year (which ultimate goes to Govt people only )but nobody bother about a permanent solution of this kind of tragedy, and whom to blame, the selected people itself donít have courage to start something constructive.

Yaar videssee bhai bhad me jaane do, kuch nahi hona us country ka, jub tuk un sub politicians ko line me khada karke jutee nahi maroge.

Unhappy Flood situation worsens in Orissa

KENDRAPARA: Torrents of water released from a dam charged into flooded coastal areas of eastern India on Friday, adding another 200,000 people to the tally of six million hit by the disaster.

Army boats joined civilian rescuers in Orissa as the floods, which have claimed 39 lives and left more than a million marooned, spread like a giant lake across the land.

"The state is facing a huge crisis. It will be the worst-ever flooding in the history of the state," he said

"This is like a real double blow for those who are just trying to pick up the pieces from 1999," Fuller added, referring to a "supercyclone" that slammed into the state, killing some 10,000 people.

orissa ki samasya sach me bahut hi gambhir hai
first the cyclone and then this flood

rehablitation doesnt reach actually there even if the govt claims it has spent so and so
a friend from orissa told me this

what they show on tv news is just covering 1/50 of the area damaged.
itna saara paise defence mein kahrch hota hai [kuch hadh tak sahi hai]
kashmir kitna paisa kha jaat hai
agar kashmir samasya nahi hoti to yahan paisa lagay jaat barabar se
