It is Dharma plus the novelty.
I gave the first bunch decently (50Rs). Then stopped when i saw the same act again. Many years after this i asked one group to at least try some new story.

On my first visit to Dirty Pai's gaon, one old gora (not too badly dressed. he was in a knicker, but looked like a guide) was at the ticket vending area of a metro station showing a lot of change and saying that he needed some quarter more to buy the ticket for his destination. I gave him a dollar or so. for some reason i came back to the same vending area again and found this guy repating the same act on other people. He recognized me and said "Good night"

I have been duped knowing fully well that this guy wants to extract money from me. I put hand in my pocket and the smallest amount I find is $5. I give it to him and move on cursing myself.

so you are saying that you know what is happening therefore you are not getting duped. Since that is not what the other person thinks in effect you are duping the other person?

Re: How do you decide he needs money?

Philanthropy as a publicity stunt is limited to a very few individuals. For most, it is for various reasons - maybe habitual, goodness of heart, empathy, a requirement (the muslims are required to donate a part of their income as zakat), or maybe no particular reason at all.

The point is, "giving" has more to do with your own mentality rather than judging the other fellow.

kya baat kahi hai!

I always wonder if this becomes selfish then - "giving" is to help others as a selfless act, but if it is for own satisfaction, then is it selfish?

There was a time (and I still maintain it) I used to vociferously state that Mother Teresa was the most selfish person in the world. And so are many philanthropic persons.

most religious charities are selfish as well as divisive...
I am the armchair critic here though. In one hour they would have helped the number of people that I may not over my lifetime - whatever the reason...

Re: How do you decide he needs money?

The word "selfish" has negative connotations. It is understood as something bad. But that is a topic for another thread

What I wanted to say was that giving happens for many different reasons. If you perceive that the other person's intention is simply to deceive you, then don't give. But whatever, don't let it ride your head afterwards.

Reminds me of 2 incidents - On my first visit to Umrika long back, i was on the way to a daru ki dukaan to buy some beer. One old man asks if i have any change. I part with a dollar. When i reach the dukaan he is also buying beer there.

In Dirty's territory, i.e. Venice Beach, one guy held a cardboard which said 'Frankly, i am on drugs and need money for my next lot'
