But they were buying grocery at Krogger's - if it is similar to Fry's , how can they buy groceries there?

Never heard of Fry's grocery store. West Coast folks associate Fry's with electronics store.

Never heard of foodsco either. Quik Stop I think is usually a convenience store attached to a gas station. Neither of them are mainstream grocery stores. I guess they haven't expanded in CA yet, or they've been driven out due to high taxes

same with me I guess.. didn't consider working in CA.. high living cost, long commutes and busy life. Phoenix is the farthest I got and then back to frosty cold winter side of US.

Re: office funnies

Ages back, in a Dalali Company.

A telex from Tokyo HQ to Delhi office on preferences for one prospective Client guy paying a visit -

Is he vegetarian?
What kind of Food does he like?
Does he smoke?
Does he drink?
Does he have a rigid character?????

Re: office funnies

Ashika's post about blondes reminded me of this convo in office few months back.

A lady with dark hair - You know my barber says my hair is the darkest shade of blonde.

Manager - no way, get out of here. (rolls his eyes)

Then says to me - You don't have that problem in India, do you?

Me - Nope, everybody is some shade of black.

Re: office funnies

This is from the days when desi IT giants used the B-1 visa to cover for onsite employees going to India for month long vacations.

A new desi guy on his 1st onsite assignment was considering complaining about a Client Manager calling him dog. New guy was like he's our boss but that doesn't mean he can abuse us openly.

The Manager was a racist African American so would call all of us desis (non-white folks) as dawgs.. we had to explain to the new guy what it meant.

Kroger is actually Ralphs in So Cal.

Coming to more incidents, this one in Shanghai circa 2003

Me and client persons were walkingto a place where you get lunch for 5-6 Yuan (8 yuan were 1 USD in those days). They used to order noodles with peanuts for me (sans the pork regular dish has)
On the way, i see one poor family sitting on the footpath. They see me and start begging.*

The Lady, who is the supervisor from client side is terribly embarrassed, first she tells me "No need to give". Then she shouts at those guys in chink. While, i did not understand a word, i could make out she was saying "Kyon Hamare Desh ki Izzat ka Faluda bana rahe ho". I thought of comforting her by saying that she would receive a similar treatment if she landed in India, but thought "She is never going to land, so let her remain embarassed'

* To give the context, in Shanghai, Desis are also Foreigners and receive treatment somewhat like Foreigners get in India, like people always try to sell you something (Mostly Fake Mont Blanc and Rolex - i picked up a Frolex for 100 Yuan) and the Beggars assume you to be more generous. I did enjoy being the 'Foreigner' for once.

There was this desi lady who was super sweet and chatty on office instant messenger.. but whenever we met at her desk she was curt, would ignore my nod or hello when I ran into her. I wonder if she mistook me for somebody else.

Now, in a 2007 visit from Hyd to Kallu Pai's Gaon, the Korean American Account Manager asks me -
"What type of American food do you like Mexican, Italian or Thai?"
Me- "Is there no American American food?"

He laughs and we figure it it is only Mac, KFC, etc.

In any case, in one month we had a taste of the world including CHinese, Mongolian, English, Korean, Turkish, Mexican, Thai, English and Indian food.

That's not racism.
Black ppl use that word to greet Ofcourse as a slang of word Buddy" used by whites.

Like....waadup daawg! They call their owns also like that. Actually they call their own Nigga too. Nigga is old now. And Daawg is getting older too. But its not racist.
Loosen up. Understand American slang and street language.
