Is This A BJP Comeback?

BJP sweeps mayoral elections in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: In what is being seen as a fallout of Anna effect and price hike under UPA II, after Delhi and Mumbai, urban voters in Uttar Pradesh have also discarded the Congress party. The obvious gainer was the BJP which swept the mayoral elections by winning at six out 12 places and was leading at four seats. As a consolation, even candidates supported by the BSP and SP won one mayoral seat each, though they do not have urban base. When compared to 2006, the BJP increased tally from eight to 10 but the Congress, which had won three seats, drew blank. It lost in Bareilly and Jhansi from where it won in Lok Sabha polls. The Congress could not even win in nagar palika and jila panchayat elections in Nehru-Gandhi bastion of Amethi and Rae Bareli.

The mayoral elections were important for the BJP and the Congress because they chose to contest it on their symbol, while the BSP and SP opted to stay away leaving on party workers to the candidate of their choice. For the BJP, the victory came as a booster after dismal performance in assembly polls held in February in which it won only 47 seats, out of total 403. The party successfully defended its bastion Lucknow, Varanasi and Agra. In Lucknow, Prof Dinesh Sharma was re-elected as mayor with a margin of 1.17 lakh votes, highest ever in urban local bodies elections in the state. But for the Congress, the decline continued after the pathetic performance in assembly election in which it won only 28 seats despite Rahul Gandhi's high voltage campaign.

Besides Prof Dinesh Sharma in Lucknow, BJP's Veena Agarwal won mayoral set in Moradabad, Shakuntala Bharti in Aligarh, Kiran Verma in Jhansi, Prof Satya Pandey in Gorakhpur and Indrajit Arya in Agra. BSP supported Abhilasha Gupta won in Allahabad. Abhilasha is wife of Nandi Gupta, who was minister in previous BSP government. In Barielly, independent candidate supported by SP IS Tomar won mayoral election defeating BJP candidate by 18,000 votes. The BSP had not contested urban local bodies elections even in 2002 and 2006 and it is the first time that party supported candidate has won mayoral election in UP. The SP was in fray in 2006 and had won in the communally sensitive Moradabad but this time the seat was bagged by the BJP.

In 2006, while the Congress had won in Allahabad, Jhansi and Bareilly, the BJP had won at Meerut, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Varanasi. In all, elections were held for 630 urban local bodies in the state, including 12 municipal corporations, 195 nagar palika and and 423 nagar panchayats. The polling was held in four phases. The polling percentage was around 50%. The elections in the four districts were deferred because of Lok Sabha by-polls in Kannuaj. The SP had won the recent assembly election with majority. It had performed well in the urban areas as well but decided not to contest urban local bodies elections on party symbol to avoid the embarrassment, in case party candidates do not perform as per the expectations.

I think the series of corruption scandals by the Kangress have kept you too busy to notice that 'Rajnath Singh' has been part of the BJP since the last 25-30 years!

Rape and abduction charges baseless and malicious: Rahul Gandhi tells SC

TNN | Jul 7, 2012, 12.05AM IST

NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday decided to meet head on the petition by an ex-MLA of Samajwadi Party seeking investigation into the alleged abduction and rape of an Amethi girl and told the Supreme Court that accusations against him were false, malicious and baseless.

Rahul's affidavit came in response to the Supreme Court's notice issued on April 6, 2011 on a petition filed by Kishore Samrite, who had appealed against the Allahabad high court order dismissing his petition, imposing a cost of Rs 50 lakh for making frivolous allegations and ordering CBI inquiry against him.

Rahul said, "I emphatically deny the allegation of rape and detention of the writ petitioners by me and say that both these allegations are false, malicious and baseless and no cognizance could be taken by any responsible person of such allegations made on websites."

In the affidavit placed before a bench of Justices H L Dattu and C K Prasad, Rahul requested the court to take action against Samrite for filing a vexatious petition to harm his public image and give a political twist to the malicious allegation that that he had kidnapped the girl and her family.

Rahul's strong response is significant in view of the speculation in ruling quarters about the role of a prominent insider who engineered the complaint to showcase his utility.

Many have also noted the CBI's unusual move in this case when it approached the Supreme Court on August 25 last year wanting to be a party in the appeal filed by Samrite. The Allahabad HC had asked for a CBI probe against Samrite on March 7. The CBI had lodged a case under Indian Penal Code Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 181 (false statement on oath), 211 (false charges to cause injury) and 499-500 (defamation).

On Samrite's appeal against the HC order, the SC had on April 6 last year stayed the HC order and issued notice to UP government and Rahul seeking response from them in eight weeks.

The HC in its March 7 order had said, "We also direct the CBI director to register a case against Kishore Samrite and all other persons who are found involved in the plot, if any, hatched in order to defame Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Parliament from Amethi."

Jaya Prada all set to join Bharatiya Janata Party
Manjari Mishra, TNN | May 26, 2012, 03.15AM IST

LUCKNOW: Former actor and expelled Samajwadi MP from Rampur Jaya Prada is all set to join the BJP. Her overtures have elicited positive response from party leaders who feel her induction could add Rampur constituency to its diminishing tally in the next parliamentary polls.

A senior BJP leader said Jaya had already met the party chief Nitin Gadkari last fortnight to get an approval. Gadkari apparently has no reservations and is open to her induction. "She has worked hard in her constituency over the past eight years and said to enjoy considerable popularity. In fact in both the elections -- 2004 2009 -- she could influence not only a section of local leaders but also the core vote bank in Rampur by cleverly crafted strategies like much publicized visits to the temples and "gaudaan" (gifting away cows)," he said, adding "but, under the changed scenario after parting ways with the Samajwadi Party, the MP would need much more than this."

Lok Manch, the party floated by her mentor Amar Singh has no presence in UP or in Rampur. Her list of adversaries is long, topped by now supremely powerful urban development minister Mohammad Azam Khan and the begum of Rampur Noor Bano. As joining BSP is ruled out for her given the animosity between Amar Singh and Mayawati , BJP is the only option to ensure her political survival. Rampur, post delimitation has sizable Hindu votes. Even during the 2009 elections, Jaya had pegged her campaign on being the lone Hindu candidate amidst Congress's Noor Bano, BSP's Afroz Ali Khan and BJP's Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi .

Luckily for her, Naqvi, who won from Rampur in 1996, is in no mood to oppose her induction. His report card in 2009 was quite dismal as finished fourth, bagging only 60,000 votes. So an opening to Jaya will ensure him a graceful exit, said one of his supporters. Being a prominent Muslim face in the BJP, he has reached a national stature and the Rajya Sabha too. The upper house was a better option than facing the electorate in an election especially when the party was on the slippery turf anyway, he added.

Meanwhile, a large section of BJP workers in Rampur are quite upbeat about the "encouraging development". Jaya owed a lot to local biggies like former BJP MLAs Sarvesh singh and Shiv Bahadur Saxena. Saxena even faced expulsion from the party for actively campaigning for the actor, and Jugesh Chandra Arora who was denied the party ticket in previous assembly polls for supporting her. Now, everything would become official, said one of them.

Re: Is This A BJP Comeback?

A politician is trying to explain politics to his ten year old son. "Son, Politics is a bit like our family. I'm the party, I control your mother the Nation and she controls you, the people. You understand now?"

"No..." The child shakes its head.

Enraged, the politician locks up his kid inside his bedroom closet and forgets all about it. Later that night, when the politician is having sex with his wife, the child shouts from its place.

"Oh I get it, the Party screws the nation over while the people stand helpless and cry!"
