Now we all know why there can never be real dev in India. why we can never get good roads, infrastructure, water and electricity
Air India is planning on non-paid vacation which is not mandatory. So its like - 'We really need you to not come for work, and we cannot really pay you. We will reinstate you within 3 years though'

Now how many will 'voluntarily' accept this??

AI sweetens exit pill for 15,000 staff

HYDERABAD: National carrier Air India on Thursday added to the country's aviation gloom but found a creative way of shedding flab.

Air India claimed it was not sacking employees or laying them off but was planning to ask them to sit out without salaries. The airline's CMD, Raghu Menon, said a voluntary leave scheme under which nonoperational employees could go on leave for three to five years without pay and then join back was being put into motion. As many as 15,000 employees would be eligible to opt for this scheme.

The merged AI-Indian Airlines entity has a total of 33,000 employees. The proposed scheme is yet to be placed before the board for approval. "The proposed scheme would not cover employees in operational areas like pilots, engineers and cabin crew. Leave applications will be cleared by the management subject to their requirement," Air India spokesman Jitendra Bhargava said. He said it would be difficult to estimate the savings AI expects to make from this move as that would depend on the number of people who opt for the scheme and their salaries.

"We have initiated a number of cost-cutting measures and this scheme is part of that. No one will lose his or her job," AI spokesman Jitendra Bhargava aid. Air India has also decided to go in for expansion only from next winter, that's if the global and domestic economic outlook improves by then.

The airline lost over Rs 2,100 crore during the last financial year. It has sought an equity infusion of Rs 1,000-1,500 crore from the government along with a soft loan of about Rs 1,000 crore.

Currently, all airlines are battling huge losses and looking at every possible way of cutting costs. During the last financial year, Indian Airlines lost Rs 4,000 crore and this time the figure is likely to be as high as Rs 10,000 crore.

Ever since aviation fuel prices started escalating this April, airlines began returning planes and cutting flights. Now with a global economic meltdown having set in and chances of revival of fortunes not on the horizon, the carriers have begun laying off staff.

so, the parasites in the govt. run shitty airlines get to keep their jobs with the taxpayers money - some of which is tax money collected from these private airlines and their employees! irony at its height!

suck on this:

AI:

fleet size: 105+63 (on order)
destinations served: 81
flights per day: 400-500 (max)
employees: 33000

Southwest:

fleet size: 539
destinations served: 64
flights per day: 3400
employees: 34000

same number of employees serving 5 times more aircrafts and operating 7 times more flights! productivity makes all the difference!

Its simple. In Air India, there is one open category employee, say for aircraft maintenance. Then to help him there is one backward caste, one more reserved quota, one more scheduled tribe, one more scheduled caste, one more dalit, one more ... You get the picture?

So for every one real employee there are 5 to 6 who just do nothing and were hired only because its the government who runs this.

Yep I can say this for sure! In 1994 when I was in Mumbai staing in Air India colony in Kandivali (90% of the occupants were AI staffers hence it was known as AI colony). I was suprised to see so many aunties easily 45+ as air hostess with not so great figure at all. When I came to know their surnames I wasn't surprised.

Opposite our flat ,flight purser used to live. Great guy! but screwing up the AI big time. First time I had US style small cup yogurt at his plae. He used to get can of coke and pepsi. Mind you those were the big things in 1994.

Once I asked him why there is shortage of food on AI flight and he told me this. ON Mumbai-NY flight Pilot used to get USD 150 per day for food. But they will never spend that money on food instead they will get it packed from the flight, which was meant for the passengers. Not only pilots but whole crew will do that.

Once you retire as AI employee all your life you and your family(Includes adult children) will get free tickets.

What do you expect from AI. I am not surprised they are losing this big of money when provate airlines are in losses

Pot calling the kettle black?

Quote:
Raj Thackeray a mental case, ban MNS: Lalu

New Delhi, October 19: : Condemning the attack on railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai by MNS activists, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad demanded a ban on the outfit, saying its chief Raj Thackeray was a ‘mental case’.
"I strongly condemn the incident. There should be an inquiry into the attack. There should be strong action against that party...MNS should be banned," the Minister told reporters.

His comments came as a response to the attack on 13 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai by MNS activists who protested "inadequate representation" to locals and chased away candidates from north India.

Prasad said the directions of the Supreme Court or any other courts did not have any impact on the MNS leader. "We can see such incidents when the elections are near," he said.

The Minister said he had spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who assured him of a proper inquiry into the incident.

Babaji, this is India and this is soclialism at its best In India we all want foreign investment, private enterprise, shopping malls, multiplexes, but we dont want the pain which comes with it. We dont want to feel the pinch.

So though our market is becoming open and economy is moving away from socialist closed economy to a open capitalist economy, our mindset is still the same old socialist 'Workers of the World Unite' type.

When Soviet Russia went from USSR to a free democracy, the overnight change brought about a economic carnage and people were not ready. India has been fortunate and has had some time for the changes to happen. We did not go from closed protectionist economy to open door economy within a year or a month. We took some time and that has allowed us to accept. However, our politicians will not understand or embrace open economy because it wont allow them to do such stupid stunts and make political hay.

So to answer your question - Jet Airways will have to raise fares to pay for these extra employees and if that does not work out, then Jet will have to fold up. Sad, true, but can't help it.

Thanks to these politicians(Thokres, Banerjees, Lalus) , the state they come from suffer badly. Hopefully this behaviour restricts to the state level.

So far Maharashtra was not impacted that badly but this continues then who knows, Companies like jet airlines and other may leave the state and go some other state.

The one upmanship between Thokres will hurt the common man and I am sure the politicians like Lalu, Amar Singh, Abu Azmi will exploit that to the fullest.

Jai Maharashtra!

Problem is that Jet Airways operates all over India and Mumbai is an important destination. So its bad luck that CITU (Communist led union) and Raj's MNS are causing this nonsense.

Thanks to economic condition, Jet airways has cancelled SFO-BOM flight starting January 2009. Hope politicans understand this and let Jet decide about layoffs and salary cuts etc.
