Unlocked iPhone in US?

A couple of my friends traveling currently in US want to buy an unlocked iPhone.
Any eCharchans familiar with the process?
Will it work in India, should they find an unlocked one?

Re: Unlocked iPhone in US?

well unlocking can be done at home all by yourself ,no big deal...currently in my class whopping 23 people own an iphone..which they bought an year ago in locked format from UK/USA and they got it unlocked at home by using a dummy simcard

Re: Unlocked iPhone in US?

There are many deals on Apple website for refurbished iphone (with service plan).
Get one from there, and when it arrives do not activate the sim card present with the phone. Activating the sim card will mean that u are in contract with AT&T for 2 yrs and will have to pay data plan surplus charges.
After the phone arrives, simply call AT&T and refuse the service. Since the sim card is not activated, you do not end up pay for the service and have no contract.
Here is the link for iphone 3G. You can get one for $99 + tax
Unlocking the phone is easy ...
Here is the link for refurbished Apple products. Currently they are out of iPhones, but they usually carry some.

Thumbs up Re: Unlocked iPhone in US?

Ravi bhau,

I have used the services of Mobile Kangaroo a couple of times. They are good at what they do. Infact its a couple of desi ABCDs who have started this company.

They will unlock your phone, sell you an unlocked phone, transfer data, et-al.

Check out their locations and services here

You may end up spoiling your credit history that way... the moment you buy an expensive video phone for $99 online, you enter into an agreement that the reduced cost you are paying for the hardware is because you will buy the associated service plan too and if you don't buy the service and still think you owned the hardware for $99 then you are simply being naive and put yourself at the risk of getting bad remark on your credit history... some folks who bought such phones at dead cheap rates with service plans and immediately returned to India, thinking themselves as some sort of shotguns, learnt it very hard when they returned to US seeing their SSN and credit have turned red..

Do things legally, even if it costs you a bit.. it will help you in the long run...

Nope, you cannot get away with it. You are legally liable to pay the contract fee which runs into hundreds of dollars. So, best would be to buy a unlocked phone from ebay.

ramesh some ppl have been able to get around it and u know them as well .
According to some of my friends who did what i mentioned above, AT&T holds u liable to the contract as soon as u activate its sim card. As long as sim card is returned without activation you are off the hook.

However I am not sure if credit history gets affected and if it does then it is not a good option.

No re-read all the fine print. Its not just about sim activation. You are liable and bound by contract the moment you purchase the phone.
