Pakistan Entering Into A New Era of Stability? or Is it?

What do you guys think? The religious parties have lost badly, Musharraf realizes now that it is time to sit on one one's own buns, rather than with the Islamic parties or in Bush's lap ...

My pakistani friends are excited ... they feel it is something that should serve as a seed to long term democracy ...

the world is watching pakistani intently? What repercussions do you think, it would have on India?

I don't think the attitude of pukis towards Indians is going to change... and vice versa. Days like these have been seen in Pukistan before... but they all came to nought... why should should today be different

Pakistan has been Talibanized . its too late for democracy to germinate again. All the Pakis who dont believe this are surely in denial

Re: Pakistan Entering Into A New Era of Stability? or Is it?

The periods of stability (stability won't be right word, I would prefer transition between violent phases) in Pakistan are akin to periods of dormancy of volcanoes. These periods are spent to build up pressures of frustration and anger over rampant corruption, regional favoritism and criminal politics. And when these go over the lid we see the so called period of instability which is nothing but much needed correction.

My theory deduces that Pakistan or for that matter any small state with large millitary will go through such cycles indefinitely. They are inherently not suited for a politically steady state. Just like very large and massive stars are prone to violent cycles of instability, the opposite is true for smaller states with disproportional millitary. In a way, India is responsible for Paki instability - though not by its own doing - putting tremendous pressure on Pak to have millitary which can anytime topple and supplant all democratic institutions.
