Gully Boy review

This is my rumaal for Gully Boy review. The movie has Ranvir Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Krotchlin, and several other unknown names.

Wait, this is not rumaal! I watched this movie and here's my review.

It is a movie about the Mumbai's 'underground' rap scene and the rise of this guy, Murad (rap name : Gully Boy) from nothingness to something-more-than-nothingness.

There are two parallel stories. First story is about this guy, Murad, how he survives within the ocean of chawls in Dharavi and how he copes with his dysfunctional family and how he deals with his identity-crisis in the land of haves and have-nots and several other how-he emotional tales. Basically, he was sad. But he wanted his ticket out of the slums and Rap was his calling. His fuck-buddy / love-interest Alia Bhatt had a better plan. She studied to become a surgeon. She basically told him, "i will make money anyways, so ja simran ja jee le apni zindagi." So he pursues his rap career and while in the process smooches and fucks Kalki "Overbite" Kochkin. There are some catty squabbles, but everything is fine in the end.

This part of the story is not too bad. In fact, some parts were quite interesting. It was poverty soft porn. Also, there was smoochie-smoochie between Ranvir and Alia and Ranvir and Overbite.

The second theme was the underground rap scene of Mumbai. The rhymes were sorta cool and some numbers were interesting. I'm not sure whether I liked it or not. Maybe it's me. In my opinion, brown folks can't rap, just like brown folks can't shoot hoops! It just felt out of character. But then again, I might be getting old and the younger generation might identify with Hindi rap music. I don't know.

Regardless, the movie was enjoyable, and I'd say it's worth a watch.

I hear 8 mile is much more explicit and has scenes, dialogues that mean you cant really watch it with family/kids....

It's a very loose connection with 8 mile.

first of all, Eminem was really a global sensation before the movie. The movie was his biopic, and he played the lead role and those were his own rhymes. He continues to be one of the best rappers.

This movie is khokhla.

Re: Gully Boy review

It is a remake of 8 Mile... right down to friend/organizer/supporter. Only thing different is girlfriend studying to become surgeon. Otherwise, family problems, low-class living, backbiting, etc. etc... sem-sem.

I didn't care much for the family drama... except for Alia's character going gung-ho over her possessiveness. The rap scene was pretty cool and hoped that the movie would focus more on the battles and end with some epic ones... but it disappoints there. The highlights definitely were Kaam-Bhaari, Khandivili chokra and Sher... but the story ignored them both. To the extent of losing them into the crowded audience at the end

Yes, 8 Mile cannot be watched with kids... but saala, what english movie can one watch with kids. Saala, kabhie bhi tapak sakta hai ye f-word or s-scene. I have just given up on watching english movies during family time

Re: Gully Boy review

Sometime last week there was a lunch time discussion on Gully Boy. I pulled it up in Wiki and saw Zoya Akhthar and Reema Katgi and announced 'No way i am watching this'. Other examples-
Zindagi na milegi Dobara

Re: Gully Boy review

The best movie about Rap music industry is Straight Outta Compton. That was a gritty movie with good music. It had Dr Dre, Ice Cube, easy-E, Snoop Dog and other upcoming rappers. It's worth a watch if you are into this genre.

Cool Re: Gully Boy review

I didn’t mind the movie . Ranbir was fine. Alia is cute and can act unlike shakti kapoors daughter. ( I have no clue why I’m comparing the two, same height weight). The rap songs were average and uninteresting . The new guy siddhant Chaturvedi seems to have potential. One time watch, couple of interesting songs .

puhlease, Shakti Kapoors daughter is as ok as Alia. They are not same height weight either.

you are probably confusing Shraddha Kapoor with Parineeti Chopra. Now those two are more similar than Alia and SK...

This guy Siddhant Chaturvedi, who plays MC Sher, had some difficult scenes and dialogues... and it almost seems like he will fail to deliver... but somehow he manages to finish up with aplomb. Definitely an actor one would want to see in more movies.

Don't know who Shakti Kapoor's daughter is specifically... but if she is the bad witch from Stree then she is good too. Pretty faces are no issue at all... acting or no acting

And yeah... welcome back Dolguyyl tai... long time, no see
