From Battle Line to Bihar: Ex-Army Men Go to Work in Bihar

From Battle Line to Bihar: Ex-Army Men Go to Work in Bihar
Patna: April 6, 2006

Wearing distinct army fatigues and armed to the hilt, 2,217 former army-men with extensive experience in enemy combat, joined the Bihar police as its elite wing dubbed as Special Auxiliary Police, or SAP, to take on criminals and Maoist terrorists who have tormented the state for years now.

At a function organized at the Mithilesh Stadium in Danapur on Wednesday, Director General of Bihar (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha welcomed the new recruits but with vast experience in living dangerously saying their induction was a historic event and a new chapter in the history of Bihar police. A number of senior police and army officers were present at the occasion.

The idea to hire former soldiers on an annual contract basis was mooted by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who, during his election campaign last year in November, had promised to curb crime in Bihar within three months of coming into power.

Without wasting any more time, the soldiers were sent to a number of districts including Patna, Nalanda, and Muzaffarpur.

The state is looking to recruit nearly 5,000 soldiers whose initial tenure of one year would be extendable to another year if needed, the Chief Minister had said on March 21.
