===========
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - It could be a confusing holiday season for some holiday shoppers.

Microsoft Wednesday announced two pricing plans for its next generation video game console. When the Xbox 360 goes on sale this holiday season, buyers will be able to purchase a no-frills version for $299.99 or a bells-and-whistles version for $399.99.

The less-expensive core system will feature only the Xbox 360 console with a controller, which has to be plugged into the system to play games. The $400 option will come with a 20 GB hard drive, a wireless controller, a headset (used for talking with other players online) that stylistically matches the Xbox 360 and, for a limited time, a remote control allowing users to more easily access the machine's multimedia functions.

The pricing, announced today at the German Games Conference in Leipzig, Germany, takes Microsoft (Research) into relatively uncharted territory. Typically, initial console prices have not exceeded $299.99 (both the original Xbox and Sony's (Research) PlayStation 2 were sold at that price).

"If you look at the processing power that's available in the Xbox 360, you'll see it is more powerful than what you can get at the PC level today for a reasonable price," said Mitch Koch, vice president of retail sales for Microsoft's games division.

While both versions of the Xbox 360 will be available simultaneously, Microsoft plans to have more of the $400 version on shelves, which could confound some of Santa's helpers as Christmas draws near.

The company would not say how many of each version it would have available. Nor did it further clarify its worldwide launch date for the system beyond "Holiday 2005". (Most observers expect it to be released in November.)

Microsoft also announced the price points for over a dozen Xbox 360 accessories, including stand-alone wireless controllers ($50), detachable 20 GB hard drives ($100), headsets ($20) and Xbox 360 faceplates ($20), which allow users to customize their machine.

Rameshp, the Xbox 360 is going to kill the PS3 market. The way that entire box is designed, Sony is going to have its market shot down. When the Xbox 360 was shown, people first though that it was made by Sony, then they realized that its from Microsoft. Plus Microsoft has signed up over a dozen japanese game makers to remove titles for the xbox launch. Also it has cool features where you have removable harddrive which you can plug into another xbox, find and play with people in your own neighbourhood and much more.

Micorosft didnt make money with the original xbox but this is the one where it will take the market over. Also Halo 3 is going to be launched on the same day when Sony launches its PS3. With pre-orders expected over 100K for Halo 3, one can imagine what Sony's launch will be.

Even though I have a PS2 and PSP but no Xbox, this time for a gamer like me it will be the Xbox 360 and not PS3.

I still feel Sony has a clear edge over Microsoft in the gaming console market.

As for the PS3, Sony has many promising games set to be released coinciding with the PS3 launch.

BTW, is Microsoft too using the bluetooth technology for its Xbox 360 like Sony's PS3?

Re: XBOX 360 prices out!

Well i was a PS fan but this time my money is on the Xbox. The processor that the Xbox has got is meant purely for gaming rather than watching DVD movies. It has been totally revamped to take care of broadband features and hard core online gaming which the Playstation still lacks. And with 3 GPU's of 3 GHZ running in tandem, you get a whopping proceesing capability of 9 Ghz. That speaks volumes about the graphics this puppy will dish out.

But here are the complete specs of Xbox 360

Hardware Specs:

Custom IBM Power-PC Based CPU

Three symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each
Two hardware threads per core; six hardware threads total
VMX-128 vector unit per core; three total
128 VMX-128 registers per hardware thread

Xbox 360 vs. PS3

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:

Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance:

The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell. Cell's claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance:

The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance.

Memory System Bandwidth:

Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.

When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 gamesóby leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and servicesówill outperform the PlayStation 3.

E3 2005: The Mystery Behind Killzone

This is just a warning before we start: what follows in this article is pure, unadulterated speculation. You hear that? S-p-e-c-u-l-a-t-i-o-n. This is based on what we know about the game, and what we were able to catch during numerous views of the trailer.

There has been tons of speculation about whether or not the videos that Sony had shown at their press conference were pre-rendered or done in real-time. Well, Epic Games's Mark Rein has gone on record to say that "in addition to the Sony demos being shown by Phil Harrison, the Epic and EA presentations were the only third party portions actually running on the PS3 in real-time."

This has sparked a huge controversy about who exactly was behind the demos shown at the press conference, and if it's any real indication of what the PS3 can actually do. At the center of this argument is the highly detailed Killzone video, in which we saw a platoon of troops take on some enemies in a very heated fire fight in an unnamed town. To put it simply, the level of detail that was present in the demo has lead many to believe that it was purely pre-rendered. Of course, Sony fans were quick to come to the defense of their beloved daddy, swearing that it was all real-time, and that detractors were "totally stupid."

But there are two schools of thought when it comes to this debate. The first is the fact that it might be real-time because there are too many 'mistakes' in the demo. You can clearly see near the beginning of the demo that a character mysteriously pops up onto the screen without any notice; a sure sign that the video is real time, right? Pessimists would argue otherwise. We're lead to believe that whoever was responsible for the demo was probably under a strict deadline that would be impossible to make if they were shooting for a 'flawless' demonstration. Stuff like pop-up and whatnot could be acceptable if it was minute -- like it was in the Killzone movie.

By running with some sources and checking various leads, we have found the identity of three studios that could (keyword: could) have pulled off the Killzone video. The first is Axis Animation, and they're the most likely candidate due to the fact that they actually created the opening scene (among other clips) for the first Killzone on the PS2. However, many of our leads point to Sheffield in the United Kingdom has the birthplace for the demo.

Out of Sheffield, there are two prominent animation studios that specialize in high-quality animation and 3D models. The first is Red Star Studio, who actually specialize in game cinematics. The other is Ark VFX, who also do some pretty 3D animation work. Out of the two, it seems that Red Star Studio would be the logical choice if the demo did come out of Sheffield, due to their industry connections. However, as of now it's still unknown whether or not they were responsible for it.

While this information was found by doing some hardcore spelunking, it should be taken lightly for now until we get some more hardcore facts about the game and who was actually behind it. We'll have more information as it becomes available.

padhu bhai,
As they say "its not the length that matters but the way you use it is all what it matters".
If we see the processing power of PS2 and XBOX I, we find that XBOX I has more processing power, and we do know who is the winner(ps2 with sales of around 80million peices world wide).
PS3 processor design is based on cell(IBM technology) technology, where we have 9-10 cores running on a single processor, compared to 3 on XBOX 360.
Sony kept the processing power where it is needed(i,e) the graphics chip(the overall processing power of PS3 is 2 tera flops and where as XBOX 360 is 1 tera flop, so double power)has two nvidia 6800 chips running tandemly(each in open market cost around 480 bucks). so tell me who wins.
but i would like to give sony a sugession, to make an adapter so that one can connect PS3 to a computer monitor rather than a HDTV, which would greately increase their sales against rival XBOX 360.
