Exclamation Infantry and special forces to be equipped with new generation assault rifles

The 1.13 milion strong army is to equip part of its force with new generation assault rifles.

Totally some 400,000 rifles are to be aqcuired.

The main requirement is for close quarter combat rifles .

THIS obviously means only one thing --that the army thinks , probably rightly , that its operations are going to be directed more against terrorists rather than conventional soldiers in the future.

For close quarter combat is fought more against terrorists rather than enemy soldiers.

Out of this some 160,000 are to be imported or license manufactured in india by using foreign technology.

Which means that the Indian army thinks that the INSAS rifle is not its ultimate rifle.

In fact another part of its force is to be equipped with a newer upgraded version called F-INSAS ( future INSAS ) rifle.

The INSAS rifle performed well in the kargil war ,and did not jam at all in the icy heights where many other rifles would have jammed.

However many soldiers are of the opinion that the rifle is more suited to conventional combat rather than fighting terrorists.

Its main problem is that it has been rigged to fire only 3 bullets at one pull of the trigger. This saves bullets as if unlimited bullets are fired at one trigger pull a lot of bullets go wasted and soldier runs out of bullets.

This is correct in conventional combat. But in fighting terrorists the rifle has to fire a lot of bullets at one pull as the terrorist carries an AK47 that fires a lot of bullets at one trigger pull.

That is why the Indian soldiers fighting terrorists prefer using AK47 rifles if possible ,even though they are not always available and they have make do with INSAS.

Earlier India had bought 100,000 AK 47s from Romania (which had a lot of left over soviet weapons from its communist era )at cut rate prices to equip indian soldiers fighting terrorists.

These are of course my personal views.
