Unhappy The emergency on United Airways Flight 172 from SFO to Boston

As I had mentioned here, I am in Boston this week for office related work.

Last night, we were on the United flight 172 from San Francisco to Boston Logan International airport. The flight started about 20 minutes late from SFO after the passengers had already boarded adn were waiting for takeoff. It was announced that the pilot was discussing something with a flight mechanic in the cockpit before takeoff.

Then as we approached Boston airport, just 3 minutes before landing, the pilot announced that there was a problem. He said that the hydraulic system was not working and this meant that the flaps and the landing gear wheels would not work as expected. So he was going to manually lower the landing gear. Also that we might have to be towed off the runway.

This sent chills down my spines and all the passengers were very quiet and somber.
We waited for the plane to land. The plane landed as if it had dropped from the sky. There was a big jolt as we landed. Then we saw that the flaps were trying to operate but there were loud mechanical sounds. All along the runway there were emergency vehicles following us. It was just like a scene from the movies. It was scary for a few moments. The plane took a long time to halt and when it did, we were at the complete end of the runway. Any more, and we would be swimming in the Boston bay All passengers applauded the captain and first officer for getting us down safely.

Anyway, the plane then went on its own power, escorted by emergency vehicles to the gate. We got off and there were some camera crews in the baggage claim area.

Later in the night, I saw the story of our plane on the local news channel. Though one young kid in the plane said in the interview that it was cool and awesome and all went well, we know it did not. Maybe it was like a video game for the kid, but all were scared for a few moments.

Anyway, all's well and we are safe.

Later it was revealed that the hydraulic fluid had leaked out and the backup system also had extremely low levels of fluid. In short it was like your car running out of brake fluid. In this case, this loss of liquid meant that the flaps for reverse thrust while landing would not operate and it would cause the plane to travel longer distances on the runway before it halted. If that was the problem then it was all good, but the same fluid operates the brakes. The brakes were also out!

Ha re... for a few minutes I could not even think what would happen. You never know. I mean if the plane had to just explode in mid air it was different. We possibly would not even know what was happening. But here, we were so close to the ground.. And uggghhh..

Saala United Airlines.. bhoss$adike saaley.. They knew something was not right on SFO itself.. Anyways, I really thank God and the pilots who did a wonderful job of landing safely.

I really do not see why you are thanking god the pilots, yeah I can understand they did a wonderful job. God? Isn't he the one who actually made you go through all this, and caused so much heartburn to your sphincter

Glad you are safe, Cha pai

Re: The emergency on United Airways Flight 172 from SFO to Boston

Chapai, United's audio channel 9 lets you listen to the cockpit and the towers. If you would have listened to that audi channel then you would have had more effect as the terrible detials would have been audible.

Anyways, glad you are safe. Its funny though becuase of hydaulic pressure is low in the flaps the plane should not have left SFO itself. There are miminum flight check requirements and hydaulic checks on the flaps is a major one. Blame United for cutting around corners.
