Laundry Room Ettiquettes

Folks,

We live in a apratment complex. Many times you see that people put their clothes for washing or drying and then forget about it.

So when you trun up for your laundry, you are staring at silent machines with people's done clothes.

Just today, we saw such a scene. So we removed clothes from one machine and lay them on top of another and used that machine.

Just as we were leaving, a young Indian woman with her older female relative came there. She was very agressive and started offf as -"Did YOU take these clothes out?"

Hey hey... We did not tear your clothes or run away with them!

Then she started off in a tirade that "We are here since EIGHT years and we always put the clothes of other's in the dryer as a courtesy". Now all dryers were full. I have seen so many times that people keep other people's washed clothes out to use the washer. Many times, ours have been ktp put if we went in late. FIne we dont complain. Unless we can wait in the laundry rooim from start to finish, we expect such things on busy days and dont complain. Niether has anyone till date.

And what has EIGHT years of living in America got to do wtih washing clothes in a common laundry room?

Since they were ladies, I did not want to retort, so I kept silent.

She went on and on till Shama gave a her a taut and deserved reply which made her shut up.

Now folks, in this country where people sue at the drop of a hat, do you think we can put someone's clothes inside a dryer?

At most we have put someone's clothes in a basket that they keep atop the washer to indicate that their clothes are in it.

What would you do in a similar situation. Mind you that one cannto wait forever, especially on a Sunday, for all people to finish their laundry and go inside a empty laundry room. In our complex, Sundays are especially very busy laundry days.

So shama taunted her and you got it out of your system on the EC.

ABEY, kisi aur din kapadey dho liya kar naa!! the best day to wash your cloths is Thursday - people are glued to the must see TV and you can really time it right -

Before friends start on NBC - put them in washer - before will and grace move them to Dryer - after Good Morning Miami take them back and during ER sort them and iron them! ..... simpad no?

Good policy. Never argue with women.

Talking

The way I do it is wait for about half an hour and then proceed to take out the clothes and put them on a clean surface. If I see them in person later, I apologize out of formality.

My apartment folks are nice (none of them is of Indian origin ) and they acknowledge that they should have been more careful about taking out clothes in a timely manner.

I think its okay to take clothes out of the washer and put them on a clean surface or in the dryer. Just don't turn the dryer on. some garments may have specific drying instructions.

You did the right thing . The first ettiqutte is remove clothes as soon as they are done. And if someone doesn't you can remove it and keep it aside. Not nessecarily in another dryer . I have been at the receiving end lots of time, people have removed my clothes and kep it aside. I have never complainde. That women was just being a desi ch00t.

The best Way to do it , is to keep ur basket next to the dryer .. so that even if u are late the person next will take the clothes and put it in ur basket . We had managed to sort it atleast in my apartment premises .

Put up a notice or something ..

In Switzerland, we have a system by which each family is allocated a specific day in the week and time for doing laundry e.g. we do our laundry on Saturday morning. Most of the time, people respect the timings.

Not really, missing anything, I mean. In France people have their own washing machines also.

In Switzerland, it is a bit like US where there are machines in the basement. But whereas in the US they are all together and used on a 1st come 1st served basis, in Switzerland each machine is allocated to a tenant on a specific day at a specific time.

Bhiyaa some complex have washer dryer hookup in the house and some dont.. the ones that dont have a laundry room where there are coin operated washer dryer.

It is extremely irritating when you have young children (you have to wash cloths so often!!!) so I have always opted for apartments with washer dryer or atleast a hookup in them.
