Thumbs up Now thats leadership - Rahul's quiet visit to IRMA

This is what I like in leaders - no fanfare, just dedication towards their work.

Rahul Gandhi does a good job of it.

Rahul pays a hush visit to IRMA for talk on ‘rural transformation’

Express News Service Posted online: Wed Aug 11 2010, 04:46 hrs

Vadodara : Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday made a quiet visit to the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) to attend a two-day consultation on “The challenges of negotiating India’s rural transformation: Evolving strategies for IRMA’s response”. The young MP reportedly shared his views on the subject at the workshop.

His visit, however, remained a surprise for the local administration, the police and the media and it was only in the evening that it was revealed that he had attended the workshop held in the morning.

IRMA officials said it was a closed-door discussion and Rahul did not speak anything specifically.

According to a press statement issued by IRMA, the two-day long consultation started on Tuesday. Besides Rahul, the event was attended by professor Abhijit Sen, member of Planning Commission, professor Amit Bhaduri of Jawaharlal Nehru University, D M Nachane, former director of Gujarat Ecology Commission and the faculty and board members of IRMA.

IRMA Director Vivek Bhandari said: “It was not a surprise visit at all. We had sent him a formal invitation and he had agreed to come well in advance. It is just that since it was a closed-door workshop, it was not announced to the media and the general public. He came to our institute at 9 am and attended the workshop. He did not speak anything specifically or gave any suggestion at the end of the session.”

Rahul, however, met a few National Students Union of India activists at the IRMA gate while leaving. “We came to know about his arrival in the morning and we waited for him the whole day. Finally, when he came out of the campus, he met us and said students would always be his prime focus,” Alpesh Purohit, state NSUI’s vice president, claimed.
