Talking This mumbai hospital itself generates malaria !!

The KEM Hospital premises have become a prime breeding site for mosquitoes that cause malaria. In the last one week, nine medical students and a resident doctor have contracted the disease.

Doctors said the students could have contracted the disease from mosquitoes breeding around the college and hostel, which are being renovated and repaired. The college is next to the library.

“A lot of unwanted construction material has been dumped outside the library and during the rains earlier this month, water collected in and around it, providing ideal sites for mosquito breeding. Workers are supposed to pour some oil over the puddles to prevent breeding but nobody follows instructions,'' said a resident doctor who is among those being treated for malaria.

“There are two big open gutters around the library that breed mosquitoes. But it is the only library. We take precautions like wearing gloves, socks etc,” a student said.

Dipak Malvekar, a post-graduate student who has been admitted to ward No 12, tested positive for the deadly falciparum strain of malaria. But he is more worried about his exams that will start from November 17.

“I have to study for a minimum of 14 hours every day, but for the last three days, I have not read a single word. I am very worried about my exams,” he said.

Hospital Dean Dr Sanjay Oak said, “We are taking all precautions to ensure the safety of our doctors and students. There is no need to worry.''
