News that would be funny if not so sad

There is a lot of news going around today... that, had it been not so sad, would have been so funny. And it seems most of these funny news clips are coming from the peaceful world. Here's one for example,
Quote:
Pakistan TV mogul gets 26 years' jail for blasphemy

Pakistan's largest media group said on Wednesday it will appeal against a 26-year jail term for its owner for blasphemy, the latest twist in a long-running feud between the station and the military.

A court sentenced Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, owner of Geo News, on Tuesday over a broadcast showing people dancing to a song about the wedding of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad's daughter.

The channel faced a slew of blasphemy complaints about the show, provoking accusations that the country's punitive blasphemy law was being used to silence critics of the military.

The charges were brought soon after the station publicly blamed the shooting of one of their top journalists on the military's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency. The army denied the accusations.

Re: News that would be funny if not so sad

And another one,

Quote:
Uncle Kills Niece for Listening Loud Music, Pakistan Cops Say

A Pakistani man shot dead his teenage niece because she was listening to loud music, police said Tuesday. Muhammad Gullistan, 30, found his niece alone at her home on Sunday in Chakwal, 56 miles southeast of Islamabad. "Muhammad Gullistan visited the house while her family was away," police officer Qaisar Abbas told Reuters. "He asked her to turn the music down but she refused and they had an argument. He shot her with a 33-bore pistol."

Women are murdered every day in Pakistan for perceived slights against conservative social traditions. The crimes are so common, they rarely rate more than a paragraph in newspapers. According to Pakistani law, a woman's next of kin can forgive her murderers. Since Pakistani women are often killed by their close relations, the loophole allows thousands of murderers to escape without punishment. In 2013, 869 cases of so-called "honor killings" were reported in the media, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. The true figure is probably higher since many cases go unreported.

Re: News that would be funny if not so sad

And this time from Saudi,

Quote:
Ban on women in restaurants draws praise and criticism

A move by some restaurants in Saudi Arabia to ban women from their premises has drawn praise and criticism on social networks.

As “Women are not allowed” signs have been spotted in front of some restaurants in the kingdom, people took to the social networks to express their displeasure or their satisfaction with the merit and implication of the unusual situation.
.
.
One restaurant owner said he felt the need to ban women from the premises as a strict policy in order to avoid possible problems following a series of harassment cases. Saudis in posts on social networks welcomed the move, explaining that the presence of women in restaurants “caused several social issues.”
.
.
“She would come in alone and focuses on her mobile from which emanates loud music,” he wrote. “She then takes out a cigarette and upsets other guests who may call in the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. This could cause problem for the restaurant. So the best thing is to keep women away from restaurants unless they have a male custodian. That way the restaurant is not shut down because of the misbehaviour of an adolescent or mentally unstable woman,” he said, local news site Al Marsad reported on Sunday.
.
.
.
“My brother has a restaurant and he says that even though there is a section for families, there are often instances of embarrassment. Several women would come in and would speak loudly without any respect for public behaviour. He says that it is difficult for him to get them to lower their voices,” he said.

This time from Canada....

A few years ago, we used to have a BIG Christmas tree which they used to decorate in our office building. It caught fire with so many lights.

They downsized it to small trees. It still caught fire.

Re: News that would be funny if not so sad

Would have been more funny if it had been a grizzly... but still, a 300 pound bear is still a massively huge lumbering bugger. Just the idea that he stood and took pictures instead of running for his life is...

Quote:
Hiker took cell phone photos of bear before fatal New Jersey mauling

A hiker who was mauled to death by a black bear in September took photos of the lumbering animal just before the fatal attack in a heavily wooded area of northern New Jersey, police said Wednesday.

Authorities in West Milford have released the photos taken from the cell phone of Darsh Patel, 22, of Edison, New Jersey, just before what experts said was a rare attack on a human by a black bear.

Re: News that would be funny if not so sad

Saudi seems to beat everybody at sadly funny stories... maybe this one may not seem so funny if you miss the humor that we still have such punishments in the 21 century,

Quote:
A Saudi blogger underwent the first round of 50 lashes in public

Online activist Raif Badawi publicly flogged outside Jiddah mosque today.
Underwent round of 50 lashes in front of crowd while shackled in chains.
Mr Badawi was found guilty of cyber crime and ridiculing Islamic figures.
He was sentenced to 1,000 lashes in total and a decade in prison.
The rest of the sentence will be carried out over a period of 50 weeks.

By Thomas Burrows for MailOnline

A Saudi blogger underwent the first round of 50 lashes in public while shackled in chains for ‘ridiculing Islamic religious figures’.

Raif Badawi, who co-founded the Free Saudi Liberals website, was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 1,000 lashes and a decade in prison for insulting Islam on his online forum.

The start of his corporal punishment began after prayers today outside the Al-Juffali mosque in the city of Jiddah, which has earned the grisly nickname ‘Chop Chop Square’ as the site of executions.

50 weeks X 50 lashes each week - 2500 lashes. 1000 lashes pe interest bhi de rahe hai lagta hai.

Over a period of 50 weeks is different than 50 a week. They probably monitor the wounds to see if they are healing and just before they are healed completely, whips galore again. At least that's what I will do if I were a sadist... or maybe experiment in different ways, sometimes while fresh... other times just before healing... and why not sometimes after completely healed

After all, isn't the religion of peace indeed all about sadism

Well, put yourself in the shoes of any of the victims in any of the posts above (except SarvaShakatinaam pai's post, which will give you the ice instead of the chill)... and you will get the chills. Though the lashes one does freeze you up a bit

Re: News that would be funny if not so sad

How right I was...

Postponed... not because this is wrong, not because this is insane, not because this is inhumane. Why because the wounds have not healed. Absolutely crazy... and a total surprise that this religion of peace still exists.

Quote:
Saudi postpones blogger lashing on medical grounds

Saudi Arabia postponed Friday the next round of flogging for a blogger sentenced to 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam because his wounds from last week's beating have not yet healed, his wife said.

The public flogging of Raef Badawi, who is also serving a 10-year jail sentence, has sparked an international outcry and a campaign by Amnesty International and other rights groups to free him.

Badawi received the first 50 lashes of his sentence outside a mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on January 9.

Trinamool minister’s shocker: Some CPI (M) women tear off their blouses and blame TMC men

By: Press Trust of India | Burdwan | Posted: January 13, 2015 3:05 pm | Updated: January 13, 2015 3:36 pm
West Bengal minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Swapan Debnath courted controversy by alleging that some CPI(M) women activists were in a habit of tearing their own clothes and then blaming TMC men for molestation.
“CPIM women activists tear off their blouse themselves and then blame TMC men for molestation … CPI(M) women activists are always in the habit of blaming TMC men for molestation but the people know the truth and don’t believe them,” Debnath, the Animal Resources Development Minister told TMC workers meeting at Baidyapur in Burdwan district yesterday.

- See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/ind...-blame-tmc-men

i found this one a bit hilarious, but women's molestation is a serious issue.
