pak handing over terrorists to india ...kaun kaun??

Under pressure, Musharraf might send some wanted men back

IN the face of intense pressure from the United States and the United Kingdom, Pakistan may extradite half a dozen of the 20 most wanted terrorists listed by India, according to a senior officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Mumbai.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had said that there was no question of the extradition of the men wanted by India.

However, following the visit of British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday, Pakistan’s foreign office sent feelers to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that it was inclined to deport some of the terrorists, the CBI official said.

Among the half a dozen terrorists, five are Sikhs who have been involved in the separatist Khalistani movement and the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane to Lahore in 1981.

‘‘Their extradition will serve a dual purpose for Pakistan. While scoring tremendous goodwill with the US and the UK as well as SAARC, it will also be seem as proof of loyalty to Islam in the eyes of its own subjects and other Islamic countries as these would not include the Muslim terrorists,’’ the officer explained.

Interestingly, despite much international pressure, Dawood Ibrahim, Tiger Memon and Chhota Shakeel are still in Karachi, although their movements have been restricted to protect them from Indian intelligence operatives. Pakistan has refused to comment on these criminals involved in the 1993 serial Mumbai bombings.

The list includes Tiger Memon’s brother Ayub, Ejaz Pathan and Chhota Shakeel. Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar, who is wanted in the hijack of the Indian Airlines plane from Kathmandu to Kandahar and is currently under detention in Pakistan, is also unlikely to be handed over.

In order to show that it has not discriminated among the terrorists on the grounds of religion, it might, however, also hand over a couple of insignificant aides of Muslim dons. Ejaz Pathan who is believed to have fallen from the favour of Dawood, could become the fall guy, the CBI officer suggested.

Musharraf, it is felt, is very keen on winning over the US in the light of President George Bush’s support of the Indian government’s stand on terrorism.

Earlier this week, Musharraf extradited Zayd Hassan Safarini, a Jordanian national indicted in Pakistan for the 1986 hijacking of a Pan Am aircraft to Karachi.

Although not connected to the September 11 attack, Bush called the case an example of increased international cooperation in ‘‘the wider war on terrorism’’.

Pakistan has also cooperated with the US in some other high-profile cases.

Although the two countries do not have a formal extradition treaty, Pakistan readily turned over its citizens Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, convicted in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and Mir Aimal Kansi, charged in the attack on the CIA headquarters in Langley also in 1993.

Similarly, India and Pakistan do not have an extradition treaty, although India has extradition treaties with most other Islamic countries including the UAE, Bahrain and Turkey. When Union Home Minister L K Advani proposed such a treaty to Musharraf during the Agra Summit, the general had then cleverly avoided it.

Yes

The infamous five Pakistan might hand over

Wadhavan Singh: Founder-member of the Babbar Khalsa who is charged with masterminding the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, and is also accused of several other acts of terror in India.

Paramjit Singh Panjwar: Chieftain of the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF), charged with involvement in the killing of former Indian Army chief General Arun Vaidya in Pune; and a bank robbery in Ludhiana.

Gajinder Singh Khalsa: Dal Khalsa leader charged with the hijacking of an Indian Airlines aircraft to Lahore in 1981, to secure the release of separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Ranjeet Singh: Leader of the Khalistan Zindabad Force, one of the few extremist groups still active in the Punjab.

Lakhbir Singh Rode: Cousin of Bhindranwale and founder-leader of the International Sikh Youth Federation.

These scoundrels should be shot dead as soon as they put their feet on Indian soil. At least there would be no hijacks for their liberation.
