Kidney kingpin refutes charges framed by CBI

20 Mar 2008, 2018 hrs IST,PTI

AMBALA: Alleged kingpin of the multi-crore kidney transplant racket Amit Kumar, on Thursday denied the charges framed by the CBI against him.

"I have not removed the kidney of any person on gun point. The kidneys were transplanted with the mutual consent of the donors and the beneficiaries", he told reporters in the premises of the designated court where he was produced in connection with the case on Thursday.

Asked whether some political leaders were also involved in the scam as alleged by another accused in the case, he said he was not aware of it.

He alleged that the CBI had falsely implicated him in the case and now it was freezing his bank account in Canada without any justification.

He was produced in the court of Special CBI Magistrate, Abdul Majid along with the other 10 accused on Thursday who remanded them to judicial custody till April 2.

The other accused produced in the court included K K Aggarwal, Upender, Surz, Linda, a nurse of Amit Kumar's clinic, Manoj, Harpal, Ramesh, Suresh and Umesh.

Jeevan who is in police custody in Jaipur was not present in the court.

Pooja, wife of Jeevan, who was granted anticipatory bail for 30 days by this court also appeared in the court with her face covered.

Talking to media persons, she said that her husband had nothing to do with this scam.

Asked whether she was aware of it that her husband was involved in illegal kidney trade, she replied in the negative and said her husband had not committed any crime.

I don't know the real deal behind all this; haven't really read it. But if this guy has really done something wrong, please remove his kidneys and let him feel what the victims are going through.

Amit, brother Jeevan gets bail in kidney transplant racket

Posted at Monday, 15 September 2008 19:09 IST

Mumbai, Sep 15: A local court today granted bail to alleged kingpin of the kidney transplant racket Amit Kumar and his brother Jeevan Kumar after the police failed to file the chargesheet in the stipulated time of 90 days.

The Bandra metropolitan magistrate released the brothers on bail of Rs 15,000 each.

The magistrate also sent a show cause notice to the suburban Mahim police asking them to explain why they failed to file the chargesheet within 90 days of arrest.

The Mahim police will have to file its reply on September 23.

"We had filed for bail today as the 90-day period for filing the chargesheet ended yesterday. Amit Kumar and Jeevan were arrested in this case on June 17 this year," advocate Ratnakar Singh, appearing for both them, told reporters.

Kumar was brought to Mumbai from Ambala in Haryana by Mumbai police in a case registered against him in May 2005 on the charge of duping a local into having his kidney removed.

Kumar and two others had allegedly promised Rs 3 lakh to the complainant and took him to Delhi and then to Gurgaon where the operation was conducted. However, in return the accused paid the complainant only Rs 70,000.

The second case against Kumar dates back to August 1994 when he was arrested for allegedly running a kidney racket from his clinic in suburban Khar.

Kumar was arrested in Nepal early this year.
