Re: Where are they now?

Yaar,

I just read that Asrani is a graduate from FTII in Pune?? yeh kuch fishy mamla lagta hai ! :This Asrani listed on top tow koi aur hi hai

Trained at the Film Institute, Pune, Asrani has lent his great performing skills to every role that he has played. Fondly remembering his performances in movies like "Guddi", "Sholay" and regretting a bit about being stamped as a comedian, Asrani feels that acting is a deep experience.
Regrets, memories and more this "angrez ke zamane ka jailor" shares it all.

1. Did you venture into Hindi movies thinking you wanted to become a comedian?
While I was studying in college I read an advertisement about an acting course at the Film Institute Pune. It is not an institute that can distribute talent. You got to have something in you that can be developed. We had many classes like dance, yoga etc.
After the training at the Film Institute I had never thought that I would become a comedian. I had thought that I would become a character artiste. However I landed with the film "Guddi' in which I played a comic role. Once the movie does well you get stamped with the role you have portrayed.

2. Do you regret being "stamped " as a comedian?
Yes, but luckily I got good roles. I worked with people like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar, Shakti Samant and L.V Prasad. They were not limited directors. In movies like Abhimaan, I had a very good role absolutely parallel to Amitabh's role. In Chaitali Hrishikesh gave me a villainous role. In the film Koshish also, I played a negative character.
Other than these producers, the rest thought that I should be limited to comedy. At one point I rebelled and made my own movie 'Chala Murari Hero Banne'.

3. Any plans of directing/producing more movies?
At the moment I don't have any plans. In the future I may.

4. What are the qualities a person should have before joining an acting school?
You should have some personality. Basically some inner qualities, some timing sense, some body language. Personality is the sum total of many things. The film institutes sharpen these qualities but you must have some kind of personality.

5. Who has been your favourite comedian?
I was very impressed by Kishore Kumar. I also liked Motilalji and Yakub. To an extent I liked Johnny Walker. Even Mehmood who was very versatile till the time his role consisted of double meaning dialogues. That was something obnoxious.

6. So how did you keep away from double meaning dialogues?
Actually a lot depends on the kind of background you come from, education and culture. I always said no for wearing female costumes unless it was very very necessary. You can draw a line. If you are convinced about something you can convince others.

7. Do you think compared to yesteryears, comedians/character artiste share a larger part of limelight today? Have things changed a lot?
The scene has changed because right from hero to the heroine to character actor to the villain everyone is doing comedy. It is a very sad state. Good-looking tough heroes are doing comedy. The audience may appreciate them for a moment but it is not good in the long run. Everybody has become a comedian.

8. Which role of yours has been memorable one?
Balika Badhu, Abhimaan, Guddi, Koshish, Chaitali, Sholay.. these roles were memorable.

9. Any experiences that you would like to share?
With time sometimes people forget you. Your movies don't come for a while. Luckily the audience till today remembers me for my performances. May be because so many movies are shown on various channels. It is a deep experience you can never get anywhere else that is why it is memorable.

10. So off-screen is Asrani as hilarious as he is on-screen?
Comedy and in all kind of acting you have to build a character and you need a lot of effort. This can exhaust you. That is in front of the camera.
As a person I am very humane and love to be alone. I just observe people and keep quiet and observe people.

You are right.. As mentioned in my post above this Asrani has nothing to do with Asrani (the comedian we all know)..

This guy is an Engineer/Author who writes for some magazine..

Lilliput :

'People like me have to ask for work. Nobody comes to our doorsteps to give us work. Even now after 25 years of being in the industry, I have to run around to get roles,' Bollywood's best known dwarf artist Lilliput told IANS.

Lilliput, who has acted in various films and even written super hit sitcom 'Dekh Bhai Dekh', maintains that dwarf artists are only seen as comedians and most of the times are not considered for meatier roles.

'I always thought that I would be ready to do every kind of role because I am an artist. But, owing to my appearance and short stature, people never took me seriously.

'They thought that I would be only good for comedy. Basically, I am a very serious person, but people who are like me don't have an option. I had to do what was offered to me because I had to feed my family. We don't have the luxury to pick and choose roles,' said Lilliput.

Shammi Kapoor speaks about his battle with the little-known disease

Celebrities are notorious for keeping their guard up, not letting the world see that their star (literally) has dimmed, that they are human after all. So former star Shammi Kapoor deserves a double yahoo for letting his defences down and giving the world a peek into his frailties.

The actor was at the Breach Candy hospital on Tuesday afternoon, along with a clutch of doctors to raise awareness about peripheral vascular disease. The relatively little known disease occurs when there is a blockage of blood flow from the artery to organs other than the heart.

In familiar territory

The SoBo hospital is familiar territory for the actor, (also a kidney patient) who takes regular dialysis at the hospital. Shammi is also a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) sufferer, where his lungs have been compromised. He arrived in a wheelchair; and ribbed the docs at the press conference, "Ah, you all are wearing ties today." He then asked in jest, "What do you want me to talk about? The last time I winked at a girl? Okay, okay, I will tell you about my experience with vascular disease."

Lost toes

The flamboyant Kapoor was afflicted with the disease last year. He said, "I lost a toe on each of my feet to vascular disease. I was saved from losing my limbs by timely medical treatment." He then revealed how he heard the doctors who were operating on him in the operation theatre. "I was given local anaesthesia, so I could hear the docs speaking: "Here I found it, hey milaa vein, oh artery.

The pain was so bad, I started shrieking, an anaesthetist clamped my mouth shut." He said gesticulating wildly to laughter by the docs. The docs admitted that Shammi started bleeding while the operation was on and his thigh had swelled to twice the size, underlining the gravity of this disease.

Finally, Shammi when urged to give a message to mark Vascular Awareness Day on August 6, told people to take timely medical help, with the same flourish he delivered lines like Chahe koi mujhe jungli kahe on screen.

Re: Where are they now?

Shashi Kapoor also suffers from some kidney problem, looks like its heridetary for them.

But overall the Kapoor family were great entertainers in film industry.I think Raj Kapoor was the first to bring sex on screen in India

Re: Where are they now?

The Kapoors are notorious for getting overweight and obese. All of them have balooned up since their middle age. Many such problems can be avoided completely by keeping weight and body fat in check.

That is why I am working out very hard so that I can be the next sexy symbol .... atleast on eCharcha.Com

Shammi, Shashi Kapoor critically ill?
By Yahoo! India Movies
Tuesday Jan 18 9:19 AM

Yesteryear's Bollywood heartthrobs Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor are suffering from age-related ailments. Both the brothers, aged 79 and 72 respectively, have been hospitalised for the past few days. Shammi, who is admitted to Mumbai Breach Candy hospital following chest infection and kidney ailment, is recovering. However the condition of Shashi Kapoor, who is undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri, remains unstable.

Amitabh Bachchan, a good friend of both the actors, visited them recently and tweeted about it. "Went to visit Shashi Kapoor in hospital and pained to see him in such condition... prayers for him please...,tweeted Big B. Bachchan, in his blog, wrote: "I have been to visit Shammi Kapoor in hospital. He is unwell, in a different hospital. He was his most charming self as always and joked and laughed over his condition."

Apparently, both the actors have requested their families to discharge them from their respective hospitals, and not to be taken abroad, so that they spend some more time with their families.
