Eurofighter Typhoon vs Dassault Rafale--let the battle begin !!

Now that the contenders for MRCA have been short-listed , lets put our bets on the aircraft we like .

Eurofighter vs Rafale--

To put the main points of the two contenders in perspective......

1 )The Typhoon ( Eurofighter ) is a truely awesome air-to-air combat aircraft for the 21st century

Super-maneuverable ( its pilots are trained to withstand 12G maneuvers )

Supercruise--It does not need to switch on its afterburners for flying supersonic like other aircraft . Due to this , it can fly for longer periods at supersonic speed than other fighters ,outrunning other fighters. Thats because afterburners use up a lot of fuel . Also therefore ,Typhoon does not need to carry lot of fuel .

Can fly at 65,000 feet--8,000 feet higher than other fighters ; thus out of many air-to-air missiles' reach .

But , its ground strike capability is limited .

Range , at 1389 km is less than Rafale .

Price is huge--90 million dollars per aircraft . Remember , we have to buy more than the 126 aircraft originally planned . The actual number is more than 200 . Thats why everyone , including the americans is salivating for this deal. Trouble is , with the price of Typhoon , we may not be able to buy more aircraft than planned

2) The Rafale is a nimble aircraft , capable of good maneuverability .

It has the SPECTRA electronic warfare system capable of virtual stealth that makes it harder to detect on radar--can approach the target discreetly .

It is a true long range strike aircraft , as it has a range of 1852 km--longer than Typhoon .

It can carry a larger number of weapons than Typhoon - no less than 9,500 kg ( compared to 7,500 kg for Typhoon )

Price is 64 million dollars--less than Typhoon.

But-- it has a radar of limited range for air-to-air combat--only 140 km , which is less than the range of the pakistani F-16's radar ( 200km )

Overall less capable in air-to-air combat than Typhoon .

ashdoc,

I will encourage your enthusiasm for all things defense.

Now I am sure that our air force is always prepared to scramble jets in case of an attack or when an unknown aircraft breaches our air space.

Can you elaborate on this protocol? Suppose Pakistan decides to fuck with us and sends aircraft towards Mumbai, then what is our action plan?

More than planes, I am interested to learn - as much as a civilian can - about our air strike mitigation plan.

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon vs Dassault Rafale--let the battle begin !!

The more I read about this, I think IAF should go for Rafale. It has 2 deal with only one country and can get full unfettered access to source codes, etc without fear of sanctions (compared to US/UK). From what I read it seems to be a very capable fighter and can fulfill IAF's ambition

I think its a gr8 decision to dump 30 yr American technologies with all the caveats that come with it. Dumping Mig35 is also good (old wine in new bottle)

Seems like Gripen could have been a good choice and its very capable fighter as well ( may be not as capable as rafale or eurofighter) but has lots of American parts (sanctions)

Eurofighter is a consortium of European countries with exception of France. The thing that is worrisome is most of the participants in eurofighter are going for F35 themselves. From what I read its very capable aircraft (better than rafale in some aspects)

My vote goes for Rafale. I hope IAF signs the deal quickly and gets this to our IAF stables asap

there is a long range ground radar at madh island at the northwestern tip of mumbai to warn against an air strike coming in .

there is also a radar station at lonavala to detect aircraft .

warning will be given by these radars . of course , in the future ,airborne early warning radar carrying aircraft ( AWACS )will be patrolling the skies , and will be able to detect enemy aircraft even faster .

there are surface to air missile batteries at madh island to launch missiles against the enemy aircraft and shoot them down.

protection of mumbai is done by the aircraft stationed at lohegaon air base near pune . in the nineties the aircraft stationed there were mig 29s ( 2 sqaudrons -around 35-40 aircraft ). now the aircraft there are the sukhoi-30s--also 2 sqaudrons worth .

the stationing of some of the best aircraft of the air force around mumbai shows the economic importance of this city .

these will be scrambled and will be over mumbai in minutes to meet the enemy aircraft . the enemy aircraft will be detected on radar about 15 minutes before they approach mumbai , but the sukhois will be there in just 10 minutes , ready to meet the challenge .

if there is any sea threat to mumbai , maritime patrol jaguars having agave radars are stationed at lohegaon air base equipped with american harpoon anti-ship missiles--earlier they had british sea eagle missiles .

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon vs Dassault Rafale--let the battle begin !!

Okay this is good to know.

Now another question arises. In the US they have a protocol for everything. Say if an enemy strikes with nuclear weapons, then the machinery gets into action and all counter strike missiles, etc. are at the ready. Only the President is then asked to press the 'Red button'.

So in India, how is this handled. Say Pakistan attacks by air. Then what happens. Our Air Force is ready, but do they have to call up the defense minister or the Prime Minister and ask for permission?

no , if the pakistani aircraft come too close to our territory , they can be shot down directly .

in 1999 , a pakistani french built reconaissance aircraft was shot down in gujrat when it crossed the border on a spying mission .

So its not like 'Minister saab hain?'

Assitant - 'Nahi woh bathroom mein hain. Kya baat hain?"

Airforce Chief - 'Dushman ke hawaai jahaz humari sarhadd par kar chukey hain'

Assistant - 'Minister saab ko kubz ki beemari hain. Unko thoda time lagega'

Airforce Chief - 'Abhi main phone pe 10 minute se hoon. Huan kya unka?'

Finally Minister comes on the phone 'Kya baat hain? Kyon mere ko tatti karte karte uthaya?'

Airforce Chief - 'Kuch nahi saab. Abhi apki tatti kya, puri gaand fatne wali hain. Abhi tak dushman ka hawaai jahaaz Delhi pahunch gaya hain aur aapke area mein bum daalne wala hain. Jai Hind sir'.

Click ... aaaah.. shwweeeeeeeee ... dhishoooom.. bhaaadaaaaam ... booom ...

Next day in newspaper - Defense Minister desh ke sewa mein seedhe commode se swarag pahunch gaye!
