Question Tip at restaurants

Do you tip when you pack the food to go ? Many folks I know don't do that. Also I was surprised when I tried to give the waiter a tip in LA, he said I don't have to if I am packing the food to go.

Re: Tip

I dont tip for take-outs. I usually call and place an order and go pick it up after the mentioned time. Its not like they are getting water for us or waiting at the table. that was the reasoning.

Why do you feel we need tip even for takeouts?

I dont tip for takeouts (voted for wrong choice above!). Usually tip 20% when I am on company trips. 15% in town.

No tip for take away or self service(mcd, burger king etc)... 15% for restaurants.... more for haircut...depends upon how nice the girl is..

Add: hope those change doesn't count... always drop them in the jar(not quarters or above).

Re: Tip

Yes - 10% for takeout, 20% at restaurant.

Remember, even the cook's salary is dependent on tips. The tip you pay doesnt all go to the waiter but is shared between the cook and server. True, the server did not do anything for you at take out, but the cook still did. So how can you not tip the cook? Hence the half tip.

Many years ago tips used to be an "added" bonus, but now the restaurant worker's compensation is based around tips hence they are sometimes (legally) paid below minimum wage because tips are supposed to make up the difference.

Stop being cheapos

Drive thrus and fast food are exceptions. Compensation packages for McD's and the like are not based around tips and none are expected.

Well...not always... depends upon the eatery... at some places waiters get to keep all the tips... some places it goes to common jar and get distributed among all the waiters and workers.... At some places, owner pockets everything and waiters get a fixed pay.

I never realized that waiters get paid so less until I saw a vacancy where they were offering a job for $3.5 an hour....which is like less than half of minimum wage. And it is a demanding job...people can be very rude to you.

A girl who used to work with us was working with univ. catering as well. Some days she'd be in tears because of the behavior of people(she was blonde white girl, so it cant be racism)... And all these people knew that the waiters and dishwashers were students and not professionals.

apparentlyno....cause waiters get the tips. Even I had a friend in college, who used to work at California Kitchen and make $3/hr. I was surprised to hear that, but in such cases tips usually fill the gap.

yup.... it seems in most of the states waiter's wage is much lower than minimum wage... but in washington and some other states it is the same.

Not true. It depends upon type of restaurant. Fine Dinning chefs make really good salary.

Must be chinks. Being cheap, no one can beat chinks.

WTF was she expecting in a "Cafeteria"? 5 star treatment?

Not only waiters, but Bus boys, Wait/host staff, Delivery drivers too.

In general (Excluding fine dining) the tips are split between Wait/host person, waiter/server and busboy/girl.
In lot of restaurants there is lot of "politics" goes on. Wait/host person will do favors to their friend waiter/servers. The bus person always gets ripped by these two.

As for me,
I tip around 20% depending upon service.
For take out, mostly I don't. Because the cashiers ********** keeps the tip. But at certain take out, if the order taker is good and suggest good stuff, I do 5-10%.
For fast food joints, NO.

C'mon Amtha pai... you don't need to be rude to waiters... esp when you know it is a student working her ass off to pay for her tuition... And most of the time they don't have to pay for these feasts...

Add: I know two indian restaurants where owners keep all the tips...
