Muslims and Dalits Are Against Anna

Why the Ramlila surge worries minorities and those on margins

In the unseen and unheard margins of Team Anna’s Ramlila Surge, there’s a growing sense of disquiet —especially among minority and marginalised groups.

Despite carefully choreographed images of Muslim children publicly breaking their Ramzaan fast with Anna Hazare, prominent Dalit, Muslim and Christian leaders are deeply suspicious of the faces on display and the voices emanating from the crowds.

They argue that Anna’s ends — fighting corruption — is undoubtedly justified, they condemn his arrest and the decision to send him to Tihar Jail. But behind his cause, they see a clear disdain for the very institutions crucial in safeguarding democratic freedom and rights. In Team Anna’s contemptuous indictment of Parliament, they see a tarring of representative politics and, in effect, an indictment of the vital safeguards of minorities.

In fact, so strong is the suspicion that even Prashant Bhushan’s left-liberal credentials as one who played a proactive role in the Gujarat riots cases isn’t dispelling these fears. Varun Gandhi’s much-hyped appearance at Ramlila today only reinforced these — in his hate-Muslim election speech in 2009, he had threatened to “cut the hand” of anyone who “raises a finger at the Hindus.”

Says Akhtar-ul Wasey, Director, Institute of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia: “The issue of corruption is such that there’s tremendous pressure to join the crowd. Because if we oppose this particular movement, they will say we are corrupt. Price rise, corruption and unemployment have given a fillip to such forces. Corruption ki aarh mein, (in the garb of corruption) they want to push all kinds of defeated and empty slogans and agendas. Now the government’s timidity in the face of a crowd is fanning this instability. Muslims, of course, want corruption to end but don’t want to make common cause with elements that want to rock the system, the only preserve of our rights and freedoms.”

Re: Whose Ass Is Most Kickable?

MMS surely. Puppet or not, doesn't he realize that the PM's post gives him the power not to remain a puppet ?? I recall another sardar, Zail Singh, who used to go around saying " I will sweep the floor if Madam asks me to". This was during Indira's time. Then he was made the President of India. Then Madam realized that it was no joke asking him to sign ANYTHING. Fooled her, he did.... that's what Manmohan needed to do a long time ago. A puppet clinging to chair..

Rahul Gandhi Emerges A Villan

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi's 'sermon' on Lokpal Bill
PTI | Aug 26, 2011, 10.01PM IST

NEW DELHI: Asking Rahul Gandhi not to give "sermons" but to persuade the Prime Minister to bring changes in Lokpal Bill, the BJP on Friday slammed his speech in Parliament saying it closes the way for ending Anna Hazare's fast.

"We don't want Rahul's sermons. It is surprising that he is giving sermons to the nation but his party under Manmohan Singh is dill-dallying on a strong Lokpal issue. We urge him stop sermonising and persuade Prime Minister to bring changes in the Lokpal Bill," senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar said.

Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley was equally dismissive of Gandhi's speech in which he proposed making Lokpal a constitutional body like the Election Commission.

"When you have no solution to offer you talk of systemic changes," Jaitley said.

His counterpart in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said, Gandhi's speech "closes the way for ending Anna's fast."

She also made clear her displeasure at Speaker Meira Kumar giving 15 minutes to Gandhi to give his "sermon" in the House when he was not scheduled to speak on Friday.

Some BJP leaders said that the speech reflected that Gandhi differs with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the Lokpal issue and Hazare's fast.

While Singh had been full of praise for Hazare in his speech on Thursday and this led to the Lok Sabha passing an unanimous resolution requesting the Gandhian to end his fast, Gandhi made no such gesture and even questioned such methods of protest.

Ananth Kumar alleged that the current stalemate on Lokpal issue and Hazare's fast was "due to the Congress and the UPA led by Manmohan Singh".

"Yesterday, the entire house and Manmohan Singh expressed concern over Anna's falling health but government is still dragging its feet on the issue. The government Lokpal Bill is totally malafide," Kumar said.

The BJP leader said his party wants "a strong and effective" Lokpal on the lines of Jan Lokpal Bill proposed by the Anna Hazare and his team.

"BJP has clarified its stand. We are for a strong and decisive Lokpal on the lines of Jan Lokpal Bill," he said.
