Teenager steals dad's cash to get married

MUMBAI: There are two twists in this tale. A 38-year-old Kurla-based businessman returned home one day last month to find that his house had

been broken into, and that Rs 3 lakh and gold ornaments worth Rs 6.5 lakh were missing. He lodged a police complaint, and the probe led to a thief inside the house. It turned out that the culprit was the businessman's daughter, who had stolen the money and valuables to raise money to marry her boyfriend.

Then came the second twist. The businessman, after discovering that it was his daughter who was the thief, sought to withdraw the case. He was, however, unable to do so, as an FIR had already been registered. As he was bracing himself to see his daughter go to police custody, a sympathetic police official came up with a brainwave. "How old is your daughter?" he asked the sobbing father. It transpired that the girl was less than a month away from turning 18 and so was still a juvenile and did not have to go to the lock-up.

V B Nagar police station officials said the theft was committed in mid-October, when the girl (name withheld to protect her identity) and her parents were planning to leave home to visit an ailing relative, who lived barely a kilometre from their home.

Just as they were about to leave, the girl said she had forgotten to take a bag that she needed to give to a friend. Using this excuse, she stayed back for some time and cleaned out Rs 3 lakh in cash and valuables worth Rs 6.5 lakh.

The parents came back a few hours later to a house that had been cleaned out. The girl's father, in his complaint, said: "We left the around 1 pm. A few hours later my son, who returned from his tuition, called me and told me that we had been burgled."

Investigators started working on the case but what aroused their suspicion was the fact that it did not look like a usual house break-in. "The cupboard had a combination lock but was not broken, implying that someone knew the number code. This raised our suspicion, as only the family members had access to the code," assistant commissioner of police (Kurla division) Prabhakar Satam told TOI.

The cops took a week to crack the case and picked up the girl for interrogation. She finally broke down on repeated questioning and revealed that she had taken the opportunity as she was desperate to get married to her boyfriend and needed the money.

"The girl first went to a friend's house nearby, where she gave the gold ornaments and cash to another person; she told them she would take back the valuables in some days," an official said. The police were not prepared for what followed at the police station. "The father broke down," an official said. "We couldn't do anything as the FIR had already been registered," he added.

It was then that an officer asked the man about his daughter's age. "We found that she was 17 years and 11 months old at the time of the crime and should, therefore, be booked under the Juvenile Justice Act. So she was produced before the juvenile court and was released on bail," an official said. Investigators said the stolen valuables were recovered.
