Thumbs down One more reason to not use Facebook

I have always had this feeling that despite all the privacy policies and terms of usage and all that fine print, these social networking websites were upto no good.

Now Facebook plans to sell your information for money to third parties!

I have tried thrice ... deactivated normally within few days. Could be that I do not understand the purpose or nature of social sites.

LinkedIn is a serious site where people dont put messages like 'I farted', 'I just had coffee' etc.

Re: One more reason to not use Facebook

Are we not a Facebook sort of site? I mean we start some thread and then everyone replies and soon we derail it.

I have seen facebook. People mostly write something stupid and then you get more chat type of replies and its all general time pass. Nothing wrong with it.

Only difference is that we dont get many more 'friends' like Facebook does..

Re: One more reason to not use Facebook

Some Facebook users' live chat messages and pending friend requests were briefly visible to their contacts this week, as the result of a bug in the massive social network's "Preview My Profile" feature. "For a limited period of time, a bug permitted some users' chat messages and pending friend requests to be made visible to their friends by manipulating the 'preview my profile' feature of Facebook privacy settings,"

Facebook confirmed the contents of a video posted to TechCrunch Europe on Wednesday that demonstrated the flaw, and has temporarily disabled its live chat software, but denied that it was a large-scale security problem.

What exactly happened in the video? Facebook's privacy settings offer a feature called "Preview My Profile," which lets you type in the name of someone on your friends list and then see how that person sees your profile in accordance with your privacy settings. But it appears that somehow "Preview My Profile" actually gave the user in question a glimpse from inside the other user's profile, and so it displayed live Facebook Chat conversations and replaced the original user's list of pending friend requests with the user whose "view" was being previewed.

Five hidden dangers of Facebooking

*Mon, May 10 03:15 PM

Washington, May 10 (ANI): An expert in online privacy has drawn attention to the five dangers of sharing information on social networking site Facebook.

Joan Goodchild, senior editor of CSO (Chief Security Officer) Online, claims marketing efforts by the company often results in a compromise on account holders' privacy, reports CBS News.

Goodchild noted five risks of using Facebook on 'The Early Show on Saturday Morning.' They are:

1.Your information is being shared with third parties

2. Privacy settings revert to a less safe default mode after each redesign

3. Facebook ads may contain malware

4. Your real friends unknowingly make you vulnerable

5. Scammers are creating fake profiles

Earlier this week, 15 privacy and consumer protection organizations filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, alleging that the site manipulates privacy settings to make users' personal information available for commercial use. (ANI)

Same here. the very purpose of such sites beats me. You have people hating you adding you as 'friends' just to peep into your personal life. People answering stupid quizzes (I admit playing some ) and playing mindless games like farmville. I always try my best to restrict list to family members and closest friends but then I too de-activate stuff numerous times because of FB's privacy policies. You just cannot go everyday and re-adjust privacy settings there or convince people around that they have been removed from friend-list due to their in-activity (and my safayi-pasand attitude) rather than personal issues. Too many people getting hurt! Sighhh....

Biggest problems with FB. If you are in it, make sure you check your setting atleast every week or all your photos etc will be flowing freely on internet

lol@real friends making you vulnerable. FB or no-FB, ain't that a regular habit now-a-days badriji. That is the 8th habit of '7 habits of highly "effective" people'
