The intellectual development does not automatically imply technological progress...for example, some professors in IITs work on problems of internal ballistics in rocket engines or even aerothermodynamics of turbomachinery...but does that translate into India's indigenous capability for making gas turbine engines for aircrafts or cryogenic liquid rocket engines...HELL NO!
that way whatever exists in the USA in the name of rocket sciences is just borrowed from the Germans (which they got after WW II) ... so under that logic even the US of A cant make their own ... they had to get someone to do it for them ...

Wonder where you get your knowledge of history...heard the name Robert Goddard? He was an instructor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (at that time known as Clark college or something like that) and was working on developing liquid rocket engines. Unfortunately for him, he was not media savvy nor did he have enough social skills to hobknob with military...so his inventions/ideas were used by Germans whereas US remained without.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_H._Goddard

On solid rocket motor side, it was the crazy chemist Jack Parsons who had done much research before and during WW 2 in California. His research led to founding of Aerojet. In parallel (just after WW 2), experimental and theoretical research on combustion in solid rocket motors was initiated at Caltech.

So, as you can see...US had all the homegrown expertise in rocketry...the only reason Germans were brought in is because US did not have anybody with the experience of Werner von Braun to manage missile based projects.

In case if you are unaware, India's rocketry program is based on US's sounding rocket research...with sounding rocket being a bit more high powered than what is typically used in model/sport rocketry. As you can see from the link below, high school students and instructors have opportunity to do more advanced stuff in rocketry than what is available in India.

maalik...ifs and buts are like the attractive mommy of a crush....doesnt change the reality...but does fire the fantasy...

why something happened is probably less important than what actually happened...so if the germans did come in and oversee the missile programme in an influential capacity that remains a fact...

and if you still insist that the US can do without anyone and everyone and there are enough professional rocket builders in the US under the age of 15 to explore the whole milky way, I for one can only say that I dont agree...

the west has the edge in creating an atmosphere allowing lateral thinking and creativity, but it seriously lacks in creating the incentive or the lifestyle that promotes competitive slogging...and that is going to be the requirement of the future...the US debt downgrade is a symbolic representation of the fact the current US model is not the correct strategy to maintain any kind of competitive advantage leave alone advanced research and development of any kind...

Landya...You are entitled to your opinion.

All great civilizations have their highs and lows...followed by "dark ages". Research and development will eventually stagnate unless US type environment is available to nurture it.

Just so that you know...Germans developed the Luftwaffe (despite being banned from research and development on motorized flying) because their engineering students had developed a hobby of designing and flying gliders, thus effectively learning aerodynamics first hand and such talented pool was used by Heinkel, Junkers, and Messerschmitt to develop some awesome aircrafts in short period of time between 1st and 2nd world war....

Re: America Has A Secret Weapon to ensure science remains the Engine of Prosperity

Latest buzz I heard is that the new visa system will abolish current H1B, L1, B1 etc and come up with just two visa types - Immigrant and Non Immigrant.

Also the number of applications from 2007 to 2009 for green cards has declined to very low levels. So they are going to stop processing more labor certifications and only work on clearing the current backlog.

I have no verified source of this information other than a friend who is going through his green card process.
