Sportswoman thrown out of train in Uttar Pradesh, loses leg

Published: Wednesday, Apr 13, 2011, 16:59 IST | Updated: Wednesday, Apr 13, 2011, 17:08 IST
Place: Bareilly (UP) | Agency: PTI

A 23-year-old national-level sportswoman had her leg cut off from her body after she was thrown out of a moving train between Chenati and Bareilly railway stations, police said today.

Sonu Sinha, a national-level football and volleyball player, was thrown out of Padmavat Express on Monday night because she resisted a robbery attempt while she was traveling to Delhi to appear in an examination, they said.

Sonu's left leg was amputated in the accident and she has been admitted to the district hospital, the police said.

She boarded the train from Lucknow and was traveling in the general compartment, they added.

Thank Railways for small mercies.

Railways offers job to Arunima

PTI | 06:04 PM,Apr 14,2011 New Delhi/Bareilly, Apr 14 (PTI) Arunima Sinha, a national level football and volleyball player who lost her leg after being thrown out by robbers from a running train near Bareilly on Monday, will be given a job by the Railways which has promised all help for her rehabilitation. "We are extending all help for her rehabilitation which includes a suitable job in Railways," Railway Board Chairman Vivek Sahai told PTI. "Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her concern about this unfortunate incident and ordered that all financial assistance be extended to ensure that proper medical attention is provided to her," Sahai said. The announcement came after the young athlete said a small compensation would be of no help to her and that she needed a permanent government job. "A few thousand rupees cannot last long. I have a full life to live and what I need is not small compensation but a permanent government job," 23-year-old Arunima said from her hospital bed in Bareilly. Arunima alias Sonu lost her leg after she was pushed out of the Padmavat Express in Bareilly on Monday night by three men trying to snatch her gold chain when she was travelling to Delhi to appear for an examination. As she lay on the tracks, another train ran over her left leg. She had fractures on her right leg and also suffered head injuries. She said her dreams have been shattered. "My problem is that I won't be able to realise my dreams. I am thinking of how to fulfil my dreams," she said. A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery) of the IPC has been registered against unidentified persons by the Government Railway Police. "A high-level inquiry by a four-member team has been ordered to probe into the incident which will submit its report within a week time," Deputy Divisional Railway Manager (Moradabad) A K Singhal said after meeting Arunima at the hospital. The committee would include commandant Railway Protection Force, divisional safety officer, divisional operating manager and engineer. Singhal gave her Rs 5,000 as immediate relief. Sports Minister Ajay Maken announced an immediate ex-gratia of Rs 25,000 and all possible help to Arunima. Some NGOs have been approached to get her prosthetic leg, the Railway Board Chairman said. The compensation will be given to her by the Railway Claims Tribunal. It will decide about the amount, he said.(MORE) PTI ARU ABN AVA EKA WAJ SDG SJY

Re: Sportswoman thrown out of train in Uttar Pradesh, loses leg

really tragic, security in the railways is so weak that it cannot protect passenger, for what government is feeding railway police personnel and if there is shortage of personnel, profit making organization can hire personnels to enhance security. imagine the consequence if this has happened to some foreign national

Why dont India have closed doors when the train is in motion. I dont think it is terribly expensive to build something like that .

Looks like you have never been to India
75% of the passengers travel outside the train hanging or on the rooftop and having a closed door will deprive them of the pleasure and majburi

Re: Sportswoman thrown out of train in Uttar Pradesh, loses leg

Now lets look at the story once again.

Lady was travelling in a train in UP. Robbers were trying to rob her of her belongings. Now any sane person should realise that its UP and that robbers are not going to be gentle about their act. She should have silently given up her belongings. At least she could have saved herself from such life changing tragic amputation and continued her career in sports.

In India, or for that matter anywhere, when a robber threatens you, its best to simply comply and hand over your wallet. No point in being a hero unless you are carrying a bigger gun than the robber.

But what if it was your wife and you are there with them . And with the robbery they felt her up too . Will you say the same thing . Dont be a hero . Let them do what they want to . I will just be a hero later in Bed
