Talking Indian charged in US for racial discrimination

Washington: An Indian motel owner in a small American town discriminated against Black customers by placing them in inferior rooms and preventing them from using the swimming pool, Florida's Attorney General Charlie Christ charged in a civil rights lawsuit.
The Florida inn owned by Raj Patel had "markedly less desirable, more poorly maintained and more unattractive" rooms for Blacks compared to rooms reserved for White customers, Christ told a court in Tallahassee. Discuss: Racism still rears its ugly head

The suit also claimed Patel told Black customers that they could not use the pool in his motel in the town of Perry.

It alleged that he would pour chemicals in the pool immediately after Black guests used it and once did so while a child 3 years old and another 5 years old were still in it.

Patel's wife once charged Black guests USD 5 each to use the pool before Patel "raged" at the guests to get out, the suit alleged.

"It is stunning to say the least" Crist said. "I doubt anybody in 2004 in Florida would imagine the kind of allegations that we unearthed would continue in a modern age."

Patel strongly denied the charge with his lawyer Earl Johnson saying the allegations were untrue. Johnson said several of the motels Black guests have written letters supporting Patel, originally from India.

The lawyer said Patel, himself being a "person of colour," truly treats everyone with equal respect and hostpitality and "our case is shored up by a number of African-American patrons that have come forward on his behalf."

The investigation began after a family reported last summer that Patel told them "coloureds were not allowed in the pool". Crists office has since found another family that complained about the motel during a 1999 stay.

Investigators talked to former employees, who said Patel would become angry if they put Black guests in White rooms.

If found liable, Patel could face fines up to USD 10,000 for each incident of discrimination.

The case first surfaced in October 2003 when Crist said a South Florida man, Dwayne Parker, had complained to him that he was kicked out of a motel swimming pool in July because "coloureds are not allowed in the pool."

Patel said then that he was shocked by the allegation. "I don discriminate against anyone," said Patel, who immigrated to the US from India in 1989.

Patel's words, said local media, echo those of the former owner of the Perry Package store, who lost his liquor licence after a Black man, who happened to be a lawmaker in Maryland State, complained that he was denied service in 2001.

Although Parker was a registered guest, according to local media, the children swimming with him and their parents were not, and Patel said he could not risk letting local kids swim in the pool. "I told them nicely and they left the pool," Patel said

Crist said then "I decided it was time to issue the subpoena and find out what was going on."

Crist was using a new civil rights law he sought and lawmakers passed last year. Several witnesses said they hear the racial slur according to subpoenas issued in the case.

Perry has a population of 6,847. It is 55 per cent White and 41 per cent Black.

if the allegations are true then this is really sad
if we want to kick out racism we should first start with ourselves, examine our own conscience and then look to others to change.

Asians are the worst offenders. I have heard of instances when through their lawyers, Asians have refused to accept fellow asians for jury and instead chosen/preferred whites or Americans of african origin. We know ourselves better ... it seems.

Of course there are exceptions ... such as people from south of Indian border such as Gpel. They deserve the treatment ... royal treatment.
