Sena whine or Valentine: Couples vote with heart

Aman Sharma

Lucknow, February 12: THE Shiv Sena threat may have dampened the enthusiasm of multiplex Wave and outlets like Pizza Hut and Cafe Coffee Day, but love and now Valentine’s Day conquer all. Couples in the city are determined to celebrate the festival of romance, Sena or no Sena, and if it isn’t the plush restaurants, they will find other spots.

‘‘ For us, everyday is Valentine’s Day because we are in love. Still, the day has significance as I had asked her out on the same day last year. We are going to celebrate it, no matter what...We’ll come here to Nadiya Kinare if it’s open and will watch a movie as well,’’ says Pankaj Jaiswal, cosying up to his girlfriend at the restaurant.

The girl is equally undaunted. ‘‘Shiv Sena ko kya problem hai? I have already decided to skip college that day,’’ she chuckles.

There are at least 30-odd couples at the restaurant. ‘‘I’ve heard the Shiv Sena abused youngsters two years back on Valentine’s Day and made them murgaas. Hope the police don’t allow such nonsense. Pata nahin kis zamane ke log hain yeh!,’’ exclaims Vandana Bhalla, a post-graduate student of Lucknow University.

She and her boyfriend, who works in a private firm, are getting engaged next month. ‘‘Why miss out on the fun on the last Valentine in the courtship?’’ she laughs.

Spirits are high at Kukrail picnic resort, another favourite hangout, as well. ‘‘You can see the rush even today; there are at least 50 vehicles parked here. There are going to be much more on Monday. We are open that day and police will be there to provide security and avoid any nonsense,’’ says Ram Dharam, the parking attendant.

Couples promise they will be back on Monday. ‘‘It is a working day and since the colleges are open, bunking classes for celebrating Valentine’s would be even more fun. At least, one day, love can have the upper hand,’’ says Ashish Malik, a college student who is here with his classmate.

Another couple sitting nearby is, however, apprehensive. ‘‘We are not sure regarding Monday, as there can be trouble. We have plans to just see a movie together at Wave. We don’t want to end up humiliated at the hands of stupid moral-policemen like the Shiv Sainiks,’’ says Uma Bansal, also an LU student.

The cold-drink vendor at the picnic spot, however, sums it all: ‘‘Ladka-ladki to pyaar bhi karenge aur yahan aayenge hi...Inhe kaun rok sakta hai!.’’

(Some names have been changed on request)

Kuch bhi ho sakta hai: Shiv Sena
‘‘Don’t step out of your houses or kuch bhi ho sakta hai,’’ the Shiv Sena warned youngsters across Lucknow today. The organisation says they have identified parks, restaurants, commercial outlets and waterparks on the city’s outskirts and will be targeting couples found here. Their protest will go on beyond February 14 to February 20, and their aim is to protest against Valentine’s Day as it ‘‘affects Indian culture’’.
