New US law sanctioning any country that buys military equipment from Russia is big worry for India

India could run headlong into US sanctions as it is biggest buyer of military equipment from Russia.

what does past experience say - we have been in similar situation before? US relation with Russia ebbs and flows. Mueller's investigation outcome will be quite significant but until then, these things will die down.

how urgent is our aquisition of s-400?

Some sort of solution could be worked out . USA could be convinced by our foreign ministry that if India does not buy military equipment from Russia then the power balance in the subcontinent could be irrevocably tilted in favour of Pakistan and China, and asked to exempt India from the sanctions.

We urgently need the S 400 to defend against China's new stealth fighter jets and missiles. Besides China is itself buying the S 400 , so we need to keep up .

if China is buying S400, how would US deal with China? The US - China trade is more than US - India trade?

Sounds like simply a bullying tactic, in Trump's usual style. I am sure that like other "sanction" orders, this will have caveats and exemptions and negotiations.

The first one came on China's ZTE

The U.S. government said Chinese telecommunications-gear maker ZTE Corp. violated the terms of a sanctions settlement and imposed a seven-year ban on purchases of crucial American technology needed to keep it competitive.

The Commerce Department determined ZTE, which was previously fined for shipping telecommunication equipment to Iran and North Korea, subsequently paid full bonuses to employees who engaged in the illegal conduct, failed to issue letters of reprimand and lied about the practices to U.S. authorities, the department said.

Not just India, even turkey is purchasing the S-400 systems from Russia. Forget these even America purchased Mi-17 Helis from Russia to give to Afghans. How are they going to stop Afghans from buying spares from russia for the helis they supplied??

So, countries are going to get exemptions.
