By that count, Buddha has claimed that there were several Buddhas before him over numerous eons (kalpas?). Buddha is the only guy in open literature that claims to remember all his previous lives, and has given specific examples of such in his discourse to Bikkhus.

So, it is not quite possible to determine which is older. If you read Mahavir's pursuit of meditation, nowhere (as far as I know) it says that Mahavir knew about previous Tirthankars before starting his pursuit of truth. So, it leads me to deduce that Jainism as a religion was forgotten before Mahavir revived it.

If Modi were president, he would say the same thing if his party was trying to revive from abysmal past, or say nothing at all.

Re: Question of the day

Guess who spoke the following.
"My understanding is that they are doing injustice towards the Muslims of our country," he said.
"If anyone thinks Indian Muslims will dance to their tune, they are delusional. Indian Muslims will live for India. They will die for India. They will not want anything bad for India."

Historians say all varieties of green and red peppers originated in North/Latin America. http://fns.dpi.wi.gov/files/fns/pdf/ffvp_fs_bp.pdf

Do you believe this to be true? or just euro-centric version of history?

Re: Question of the day

Do you think life exists (or existed in past) on Mars?

There have been observations of curious "rock formations" in photos transmitted back by Mars rover that resemble some life forms or past life forms.

These pix from Mars depend on the camera angle. There was a big news on the face in Mars, which on closer inspection does not look so.

Regarding Life on Mars, wait till Maven and Mangalyan plus others work and figure out the answer.

Balaram was side-kick to main Avatar, Krishna...like Laxman to Ram. So, he is automatically disqualified to be Vishnu's avatar.

Buddha was added to the list for political reasons. My justification for this is as below.

It must be noted that Avatars give consistent message. For example, all Avatars up to Krishna have kept all options open to destroy "anti-social/anti-human elements".

If the priests had been robbing the society, then Vishnu's avatar (for this purpose of) for protecting society would have destroyed all the priests/Brahmins by violent or other means. They would cease to exist due to direct actions of Avatar or society would be inspired to overthrow them under guidance of Avatar. Buddha never attacked Brahmins/priests directly, he only spread his message and engaged in competitive discourse when Brahmins tried to block his way.

Furthermore, if one counts the age of Kaliyug to have started with Parikshit's ascent to the throne, and even if one were to liberally estimate that to be 10000 BC (most estimates put it around 3000 BC), there is a LOOOOOONG way towards end of Kaliyug which is of 432000 years. Clearly, in such a huge span of time, there has to be a missing Avatar somewhere.

Finally, Avatar only happens when there is ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE of any human resistance to "anti-social" or "anti-human" forces and that survival of humanity is under threat. This was not the case in time of Buddha.

For all these reasons, 9th avatar of Vishnu remains a mystery. It has also been kept a mystery for a reason that with 8th avatar some dissatisfied devta had broadcast his arrival (Akashvani but not All India Radio) to Kans/Kamsa. As a result, even his arriving with full battle gear (including Sudarshan chakra), he could not defeat Jarasandha (fled from battle and thus called Ranchhod) and had to rely on Bhim to do the job.

My personal belief is that the 9th avatar of Vishnu will come about to battle Cyborgs or Robots or extra-terrestrial conquerors of earth. This because humans space exploration will result in humans having to side with one of the two sides in some inter-galactic war some day.
