Thumbs down Indian Doctor's company prospers by questionable medical/business practices

The LA Times writes up
Prem Reddy MD, a cardiologist turned for-profit hospital entrepreneur who claims to be worth $300 million. He tools around in a $1.4 million helicopter and has a 15,000 square foot mansion with gold-plated toilets formerly owned by Roy Rogers. How he does it: he buys struggling community hospitals, cancels their insurance contracts, dumps services that don't have a big profit, (allegedly) turns away patients without insurance, and (allegedly) lets quality slip. He does that Bob Dole thing in referring to himself in the worshipful third person: "There isn't anybody like Prem Reddy that can face so many challenges in the medical field." I mentioned him two years ago, when his brother, a CEO of one of his hospitals, fired the CNO and HR director after they claimed he (Prem) was drinking while working in the ED and using a triage system based on insurance coverage.

A person is supposed to become a Doctor to help people, NOT to make lots of money. People are so greedy.

Sounds much like how Lakshmi Mittal got rich and famous...except that Lakshmi Mittal bought steel mills

Doctors help people and while at it still need to pay mortgages, bills, and support family, cover money spent. This guy must be a Marwari of Baniya variety.

Some of Reddy's actions are courageous, such as taking on Insurance industry. But he seems to have gone too far sucking up to his own ambition.

I agree...Doctors have the RIGHT to make money as anybody else. Its just the hypocrisy that ticks me off.

As a plumber, I find it deeply disturbing that I do not get as much respect, as say, a urologist/cardiologist/nephrologist. After all, even they have to call a plumber if their bathroom gets clogged

At least, plumbers have by far a better knowledge of fluid flow than most cardiologists/urologists

You should be. We all should be of what we are. Afterall we are not Pakis atleast.

And doctors work their ass off to achieve their educatin and expertise in medical field so why not? As long as they don't do malpractice like those some doctors in India (ofcourse in USA too), nothing is wrong in making money.
