Re: Book to be pulped. Free speech curbed??

Ok .. you guys are talking about 3 separate issues - historical inaccuracy, hurting Hindus' feelings, an attack on Hindu faith.

1. Historical inaccuracy. Agreed. There seems to be several poorly researched references and anecdotes in the book. But do you ban a book for having some dates and names wrong?

2. Hurting Hindu feelings. Simple - dont read it. You know what you are getting into by buying/downloading the book. If you think your feelings will be hurt, why read it? Just like I dont watch gay (male) porn because I know it will make me want to puke. I dont ask them to ban it. I just dont watch it.

3. Attack on Hindu faith. This is a slightly tough one. If you see this as part of a systematic attack on the Hindu religion by undermining the tenets and principles of the mythology, then you do have a point. But ......... think about this. What about the systematic brainwashing done by the religious people to get people to believe in their version of the truth? So why shouldnt we ban all religious books, by that logic. There are a significant number of atheists in the world. Are you not undermining their faith by publishing propoganda items like Bible, Gita, Koran etc. Ok, even a finer point here ... by this logic, isnt publishing any religious book offensive to the other religions. Each of them tend to be mutually exclusive, correct.

Where do you draw the line? My opinion is that, yes, this book is meant to sell copies and make money through a controversy. Its also indended to ridicule a religion to some extent. But all religious books ALREADY do that. So why ban the anti-religious books?? Now, please dont bring up Islam as a comparison. We are not and do not want to be the equivalent of the fanatic mullas. At least, I dont. Maybe there are others who see that as the only way to keep their religion alive. To each his own.

I agree partially on #1 and 2.. but lets not forget that the book hasn't been banned, the publisher reached a court backed deal with the petitioners. And that too a publisher no less than Penguin.

On #3, there are umpteen books written to degrade Hindu Gods, be it Shiva, or Ganesha or Kali.. how much ever a westerner may study the Hindu religion they will never be able to comprehend and accept Hindu philosophy.. and Indians don't need a foreign author's cocktail of confused commentary.

You forgot the most important one - allusion to Sex. Else, why do you think, the book sales went up.

Re: Book to be pulped. Free speech curbed??

Found this in a good article about this whole controversy..

Quote:
Doniger has reportedly donated money to a group in which important leaders were members of the racist organization Ku Klux Klan. The members of the white supremacist group, Stormfront, admire her as a “a true White Nationalist soldier” and “one of the white nationalists who is from the left” and assert that her “method is primarily to point out the negative influence that Hindus have had on the world in general, but this does not mean that she does not highlight White pride. She does that too in her books when she gets the chance.” The white supremacist group recommends using Doniger’s writings to belittle Hindus.

One may protest that I am unfairly portraying Doniger as a racist based on frivolous associations. Let me make it clear that I am not concluding that she is a white supremacist. She may or may not be one. I do not have evidence to conclude either way. I can only cautiously note the disturbing fact that among her admirers are the most rabid white supremacists in the world. They are emphatic that her writings are the best weapons to belittle the Hindus. On the other hand, Doniger and her leftist supporters abandon all scruples to portray the Hindutva movement as fascist or intolerant of free speech based on a tenuous association between the litigant and the broad-based movement. May I remind Doniger that it is a self-defeating ploy to disingenuously portray ‘Hindu nationalists’ as intolerant when your own white supremacist admirers hail you as a “true white nationalist soldier?”

Oh, so now she's a racist? If you don't agree with her opinions, then you'll call her a racist and anti-Hindu?

Prof Wendy Doniger is a respected academic at the University of Chicago. She has been studying Hindu texts for many, many decades. That's her life's work. She translates these texts from Sanskrit herself. She doesn't need an interpreter. She knows much more about Hinduism and India than 99.99% of Indians.

I understand that some people are upset with her interpretations. She uses psychoanalytic theory. I dunno anything about that, neither, I suspect, do most of those who abuse her.

There was a thread here calling Krishna a cheat. If she says something on those lines, they jump on her, calling her anti-Hindu. The texts she interprets are a window into the society that existed then. Attributing malice to her interpretations is just silly. Just because you don't agree with her, you attribute malice to her?

The man who filed a case against her in the Delhi court called her a woman hungry for sex. This tells you something about this man's mentality; it doesn't say anything about Prof Doniger.

This chap is upset because she implies that Ramayana is fiction. What is Ramayana if not fiction? Are we supposed to read it as history now? Some people think that Jesus was born after a very special activity called Virgin Birth; the people who believe Ramayana is history fall into the same category.

Re: Book to be pulped. Free speech curbed??

Atta boy sanjay.. Ramayana, mahabharata, krishnaleela etc etc are all MYTHOLOGY.. i.e nicely written stories/novels like you have those james hardly chase and michael crichton blokes and nothing more.. weed induced stories. They are not facts and they are not history (or may be they are history as they say.. oh well he is history now).. they were used as a teaching tool for morality in days when people were illiterate and were more receptive to stories as their guideline.. like you have these days in school.. a story and then a "the moral of the story is" kinds.

Public can get their underwear in knots over nothing..

As for her KKK connection.. sure wasshisname.. that daadi waala most wanted feller.. he is my cousin...
