Kaniayalal... Jeevan... really. Okay, let me redefine position #1... maybe that will help us with position #2.

If you guys are doubting that Gabbar Singh is not the number 1 then can you think of any other villian who had such popularity that even a full generation later people quote his dialogues? Any other villian whose dialogues were broadcast on public loudspeakers on many street corners... and not just that but the loudspeakers usually gathered a crowd... a crowd enjoying and repeating the dialogues. Any other villian who would say, "Kitne aadmi the" and you could literally hear the silence that ensues?

Who would you think can be a contender... worthy enough to grab the second spot? Nana Palsikar... Kanhaiyalaal... Jeevan... really? You could just as well have recommended A. K. Hangal (if only he had been a villian in any movie... I think there was one... can't remember which one). Please... the villian has to shake the entire movie... take the villian out and the movie collapses. Mogambo? He was a kiddy villian. What kind of a villian true to his salt would keep on repeating inane dialogues... "Mogambo khush hua"... really... and that causes his victims to piss in their pants? The #2 villian cannot go around muttering words like "Nanga nayega kya aur nichodega kya". He has to have more presence in the movie. He should encompass the movie... spreading havoc to every other character in the movie.

Manzil, Amitabh and Maushami chatterjee.
Rimjhim Gire Sawan, Sulag sulag jaaye man
bhige aaj is mausam mein, lagi kaisi ye agan...

Hangal is not exactly the villain because its not a good Vs bad movie, he does screw amitabh so bad that he lands in jail and out of favour of everybody - so a villain in that sense.

Bachchu Yadav of shool
Om Puri in Pitaah

I have already discussed Bachoo Yadav and why he cannot be considered a terrorizing hooligan.

Om Puri in Pitaah? What character? What does he do?

Chakravarthy in Satya could have been considered if he had terrorized the entire building where he lived and forced himself upon the character of Urmila. But he is too tender to do all that... and hence, not worthy of #2. Bajpai could be considered... but I am sure there are many more ferocious.

My first post suggests some... then we have had some good recommendations by esteemed echans. But none strikes really good... nobody comes close to #1. I will watch ChinaGate and Jungle one more time (hopefully soon... backlog bahut hai) and see if the villians rise up to mark

by that token Naseeruddin does that with his boyish character in Nishaant.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhtPaiCDMnw

watch this movie and let me know what you think....imagine you playing a role of school master Girish Karnad...would you wanna be in his shoes?

The next super villain character (not actor) is that of Kaali played by Charan Raj in the movie Pratighaat...where he nudes Sujata Mehta's character (lawyer's bold wife) in open in broad daylight in midst of the housing colony.

Many a villain character have done this (& other rape scenes) but none as effectively as Kaali in Pratighaat

amrish puri - you have whole generations chanting 'Mogambo khush hua'

in other films use this character - gogo in andaz apna apna who is mogambo's bhateeja.

Please... no comedians as villians.

Dhurwnadar pai, I have thought of including Naseeruddin... maybe even watch that movie (Sadhu Meher or no Sadhu Meher). Kaali is a good candidate... public denuding and not a whisper from the crowds (maybe the crowds were anticipating the scene).

bhai mere,
what exactly u want?

u said "popular" above - well mogambo or mhatrey or even jageera were likely most popular after gabbar.

u said most prominent character of the movie - well satya was hardly anything without mhatrey

must be part of a blockbuster movie? yes/no? pitaah was a movie starring Sanju Baba and Nandita Das with Om Puri as some thakur/landlord. Sanju is a poor worker under thakur and he faces such cruelty that the animal inside him finally revolts. rest is for u to watch. its a movie directed by mahesh manjkerar of Vastav fame.

u think Bachu Yadav didnt have a sufficiently cruel persona? cmon.

u r trying to get one answer to mutiple questions i think

Arey yaar, it isn't that hard. I was watching ChinaGate and wondered if there could be another villian in any movie who could come up to Gabbar Singh. Jageera seemed to come close but did he have any competition. That's all... that's why the thread (did not expect this kind of response... but if you guys keep posting maybe this will make the mark for COTW award).

Bachoo Yadav was a good villian... but he keeps trying to make friends with the hero... instead of squashing him like a fly, like a true villian would do. That's why I said that he was more of a politician than a worthy villian.

I acknowledged a lot of villians noted by others... some good, some I hadn't seen. But if you say so, fine. We can gather all the noted ones and maybe poll on them. We can then decide who can grab the second position
